I think I have a vundo infection. I have tried running Spyware Doctor and it will usually find 5 infections are remove all but one which is a file called vtutr.dll. I have run HJT and will post the log for it. I tried a couple of fixes I saw on here but it didn't remove it. I'm looking at probably having to image it pretty soon if I can't get it off. So any help you can give would be more than appreciated!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

I apologize for not reading that before I posted. I'm sure it must get pretty annoying when people ignore it. I will be back when I get all that done. Thanks again.

No problem! And if you have not gone too far yet, I suggest that you give the below a run and then continue on with the READ & RUN ME.

    Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If you don't see the above until after running the READ & RUN ME that's okay. Run the ComboFix step afterwards and attach the ComboFix log along with new logs from GetRunKey, ShowNew and HijackThis. Make sure you install and rename HijackThis as requested. This is critical for Vundo infections.

Hey, the combofix deleted the file I think. Should I go on and run all the other scans? They have just been taking about an hour and a half or so and not really finding anything except for quaratined files or tracking cookies. Do you think it would be worth it to keep going? Before running the combo fix I was getting messages pop up about the virus about every 10 seconds and it has stopped completely. I know you can't tell for sure without all those scans but what do you think?

In most cases of Vundo infection there are quite a few other infected files deposited on PCs and none of the tools actually remove all of them. Thus yes it really would be in your best interest to run the other steps. However, I'll make a deal with you to try and save some time. ;) Run only the GetRunKey and ShowNew tools mentioned in the READ & RUN Me. These will run in less than a minute and attach the logs from them. If those two logs are clean, you are probably okay. If those two logs are not clean, you really need to run the other steps in the READ ME.

You also need to attach the requested log from ComboFix!

Thank you very much for your help. I had actually run most of the other stuff except for those two so all I haven't run really is the Panda Scan. I couldn't ever get the CounterSpy to work. It was stalling in the download and when I finally got it to download and start installing it quit and told me there was an error that was "error2350.fdi". So I ran the AVG and although I followed the instructions and told it to create a file every time even if there were no infections, it still didn't create a log. All that was there were tracking cookies though. There were no viruses, but I don't have a log for that. I am attaching the other logs though.

Is this a laptop provided by a school?

You skipped step 2 of the READ ME or you did not do it properly. Please do it now and then delete the below file.

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\SpyHunter.lnk

You are in pretty good shape overall. You infection had not spread too much. We just have a couple of things to do.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

Now attach new logs from GetRunKey and ShowNew!

    Is everything working okay?

Well, it is a laptop that I use for school. It is one that I purchased, but they put some of the software on and a lot of the programs we have are through liscensing agreements they have.

Okay! It has some anti-theft and locator software installed on it.

See my previous message! I added some more things to do.

Ok, I did the things you told me to do. Apparently I did miss that step, not sure why. The file you told me to delete, the spyhunter was just a shortcut. Should I delete the actual file? Everything seems to be running pretty well though. The internet is still slow at times and skype encountered an error when trying to start up, but other than that everything seems fine.

Delete the shortcut and anything else related to SpyHunter. I did not see it installed but it is not a recommended program!

These are not malware issues and anything you have running will affect your internet speed especially if you allow Skype to run at boot up (which you are doing). There is no reason to do this. Only run Skype when you wish to use it. The same applies to other programs like the below:

    Desktop Weather
    C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe
    SightSpeed

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you very much for all your help. I am working on the steps in the protecting yourself from malware pages now. One thing though, do I need to keep killbox? Does that mean though that my system is clean? If so, you are a lifesaver. Thanks again for all your help and hopefully I won't be needing it again anytime soon!

We did not have you download Pocket Killbox. If you downloaded this on your own, and wish to keep it that's fine. It is relatively small.

    Yes! And you're welcome.

I have a quick question for you. Ever since clearing out the virus. I have been getting error messages for random programs, AIM was repeatedly giving me messages about a script error and asking me to debug and a couple of times it has given me the blue screen once while I was shutting down, once while I was trying to restart. It isn't up long enough for me to read what the error is, but I was just wondering if this could be some residual effect of the viruses that were on my computer. Should I still go ahead and image it or is there something you know of that might be causing these problems? Thanks again for all your help!

I tend to doubt this is related to malware. You may want to try uninstalling AIM, rebooting (don't skip) and then reinstall.

Not sure if it is due to the malware or not but some newer forms of Vundo have been known to cause a window to popup complaining that SuperMWindow needs to be shutdown.

Please run this procedure Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal and attach the log. If you already had VundoFix on your PC, delete it and make sure to download and use the copy from the link given since it was recently updated.

Here is the log from the Vundo Fix. It didn't find anything that it listed. I ran a full scan with Spyware Doctor last night though before I read your message and it did say that it found one. It was called ddcdcyw.dll.vir, but it was able to remove it. Thanks!

That was not an active infection that Spyware Doctor found. It was a backup created by running other tools like VundoFix or ComboFix...etc. If you had completed all of the instructions give in me final instructions message (msg # 13), those should already have been deleted unless for some reason it was not in one of those backup folders for those programs. Was it in one of the below folders:
    • C:\Qoobox
    • C:\ComboFix
    • C:\VundoFix Backups

Well, I'm having trouble finding the log file from the virus scanner, but I think it was in the same folder the original virus was in. It was in Windows\System32. None of the folders you mentioned are in my folder now except for the VundoFix folder which was created this morning when I ran the scan.

Well I don't use Spyware Doctor so I cannot tell you how to find a log or a history of what it finds but it should be somewhere. Look in help! Either way, what was found was an inactive file that you don't need to worry about. If Spyware Doctor but what it found in a Quarantine folder, running another full system scan using a different antispyware scanner could even detect what Spyware Doctor quarantined but it still would not be an issue since it is not active. This is another reason the first steps in the READ ME suggest emptying all quarantines and vaults.
