Free photo backup app with this feature

Please be patient with me cause I did a search and found lots of MajorGeek posts concerning free photo backup apps, but none that seem to have the feature I really would like to have. This feature automatically keeps track of the photos you have backed up (onto a disk, or whatever). Corel has it, but Corel costs money. I have both ZoomBrowser (came with the Canon digital camera) and Picasa and they are great, but I have to keep a paper record of the photos I have put onto disk for backup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you describe how you are currently backing up your photos?

Personally, I have a simple batch script that backs up all my files from my storage partition to my external hard drive every shutdown. It wouldn't be hard to change it to print a list of every file it backs up:

    Code:
    xcopy [I]source[/I] [I]destination[/I] /ekidcy >> lpt1
This for example, if you supplied the path to your pictures in source, and a path to their backup location for destination would give you a simple program that would backup your pictures in source to destination, sending each line to a printer.

Actually, you may have to send the output to a file first, but that's only one command more.

Thanks, Mada Milty, for your quick reply. Your system may be beyond my computer capabilities. Right now, I back up my photos by using a burning program (Sonic) to put them onto a DVD. I just add the ones since the last burning. But I have to keep track--on paper--of which ones I have backed up so as not to duplicate. I had a trial version of Corel that came with my computer and it put a checkmark next to the photos that were backed up using Corel.

What, exactly, is the full name of that Sonic burning program? Is it actually Roxio's RecordNow? Does it feature incremental and differential backups? That might be a solution.

It is Sonic DigitalMedia LEv7. It came with my Dell computer. On the Start Menu, Record Now and Copy Now are listed, but nothing comes up when I click either of them. Only the LEv7 will come up. It has a feature it calls appendable which allows you to add to the disk until it is full.

    Hi Frybo

I maybe a tad off on what you wish to achieve, but I hope I'm close in what I read in your posts,

Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition, is not only a free basic editor of images but a catalogue application too and if you have when burning your CDs named them then this application will highlight a pic as being on CD and when you check its properties it will tell you the CD its on.

Also does backup of images to disk, as well as send to email, basic image editing, red eye, contrast etc

To save space when images are on CD its best when adding them to the album, to tick the check box in the image below, this saves a thumbnail from the CD to your HD, thus saving space and allowing you to know were the images are and that they are on CD ( via the CD logo on the image in the catalogue )

    As an example:

The images in this screenshot have a CD logo in corner, indicating they are on cd,

double clicking one to open brings a larger pic in which to edit or use it will highlight you need to enter the CD or location its on,

you can also by choosing View > Arrange by Folder Location have the images listed suprisingly "by location" so this will give you an idea where they are on CD or HD/Folder.

Download ( maybe a tad later as we still have older version 3.0 where as the newer 3.2 is out and I have mentioned to MA about updating our links, if your in a hurry to download it get it from Adobe )

and do note you will need to register this app but its FREE.

Wow, Halo, this looks just like what I'm wanting. I can hardly wait to download it and try it. Many thanks for your post and for the helpful instructions and suggestions! Also thanks to others who responded. As I've written previously, I always get the help I need from MajorGeeks.

Hello Halo: No trouble downloading, installing and understanding most of Adobe Photoshop Album SE, thanks to you. But after I burned a test CD of a few photos, the CD icon did not show up in the upper left corner to indicate the photos where on a CD. I did name the CD. I have 3.2 and its burning page does not look like your screen shot. Have any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry, I can't find quickly how to edit my message. Also, does the burning have to be through Photoshop Album SE, or can it be with a different burning app, such as XP or Sonic or Nero?

And another note: I don't see anything in the PDF help file referring to the highlighting of a pic as being on a CD. Is it possible that version 3.2 doesn't have this and 3.0 does?

If you want to see what is on a picture CD, open it in Windows Explorer. Select list and do a screenshot of the list. Print it out and keep it with the CD. When you add more pictures, do a new screenshot and print it out.

Thank you, plodr. I tried that and it certainly does work. Now I hope to find a way for the thumbnails in the photo editing application, such as Photoshop, to indicate that they have been backed up, or copied, to a disk so I don't duplicate the effort.
