A supermarket story...

    Some of you may know that I live in Moscow (Russia).
    I have witnessed an event that disgusted me a bit yesterday. I went to one of local supermarkets to get some food etc. in the evening. I saw this:
    Two women, having administrator badges hanging on them, are standing near the cash, trying to open it with a key, seemingly to get the daily receipts. Suddenly a shop-cleaner (a young girl about 20-25 years of age) approaches them and asks those two elderly ladies to move a bit. She says that she wants to take away the garbage can, that is apparently full after the day's work, from under the cash.
    One of the administrator-ladies says very rudely: "Back off. You ARE NOT taking the garbage now! We're taking away THE MONEY, are you blind or stupid?" (the capital are the words emphasized)." The girl blushes and starts moving backwards, when the other lady says: "Yes, you, THE SHOP-CLEANER!". At hearing this the girl almost burst in tears and ran away.
    The matter is: maybe this event is rather commonplace, everyday and usual. But how come, that people treat others with such disgust and arrogance. Yes, maybe they feel themselves very powerful to be the two administrators of that stinky, second-quality, rather dirty shop (I never go there, but it is open 24/7 and it was late already). But they are completely nothing TO ME, even as a recent graduate of a university I regard them as inferior beings after such behavior.
    And poor girl. Maybe she didn't have enough money or talent to get higher education - and she has no other opportunities in life except working in this second-class shop. But is it right to wipe your feet at her because of this? This type of human behavior I will never understand!
    P.S.: And sorry for the clumsy language sometimes...

    Hey HelpMeWithMyMac you wouldn't want to see me attempt to communicate in Russian, you did very well in communicating your thoughts in another language.

    Most people that treat others like that do so because they have a massive inferiority complex and putting others down makes them feel better about themselves. Unfortunately it happens World-Wide and is not limited to Russia.

    Sadly it is not confined to your country. I find since I have gotten older (ok Old) it is much easier to voice my opinions. I would have told those two biotches my thoughts, being they were being so public, they were the ones in the wrong.

    Thats a sad story but as BCG said its worldwide. People in the US have no respect for anyone but themselves and think they can speak however they want to whomever they want. One day they will say something to the wrong person!

    People also as BCG said feel very low about themselves, so putting down others is the only way to make themselves feel better. Its good I wasnt around those ladies because I wouldn't have hesitated to give those two a piece of my mind.

    Most people know that about me, I dont hesitate to speak my mind especially if I think someone is being injusticed or taken advantage of. Yes, there are times when I dont say anything because sometimes people just want to fight but hey I've got a big mouth and I know how to use it LOL

    Little minds with big egos - a common, and world-wide problem. They are the ones who always have a pointless point to prove, and a mute drum to beat. They think, (or hope) they are impressing someone, but fail to impress, even themselves.

    They are a bit like the dominant Seagull that's always pecking the weak, until it eventually gets driven off itself. So much for human evolution. rolleyes

    I really feel for that girl. I wish her all the best.

    Ya know, you yourself can join in with the ignorance. Who are you to put down an employed woman, because of her job title? A second class-shop? I work at a grocery store as well. Wages may not be up to your standards, but myself I can proudly say that I have dental, drug, and eyeglass benefits/coverage. I have a pension plan, flexability, I work full time hours quite often putting up with sour people such as yourself who apparently are on a higher level than the rest of us working class citizens.

    But I continue to smile.

    "My job is more important than your job" I hate that kind of attitude too,many admins and security guards are like that and is the reason they chose the job.

    Some little people need that bit of power to make themselves feel important which is just pathetic

    I agree.
    Their lives are probably shit, and they want to drag other people down to their level so they feel better. It's a power trip.
    The good news is that there are plenty of people in the world who are not like this. The sad thing about it is that people like them are allowed to breed.

    Hey HelpMeWithMyMac!!
    When I went to Moscow, I had to take my hands out of my pockets while I was standing in line to see Lenin's preserved body. Putting your hands in your pockets was considered disrespectful. As an American, I found this very funny. Uniforms seem to make people lose their brains. The person without the uniform suddenly becomes a non-human and is often treated like a dog. Look at how demonstrators in NY and Chicago were treated during the demonstrations before the U.S. invaded Iraq. The process of trying to control people by shaming them and treating them disrespectully is very old and it still works.

    Too many egotistical people around this world :(
    I would have gone over to the 2 administrators and told them that if this is how they treat their staff, then they are not getting my custom again and shove my basket/trolley at them and walk out.
    I hate bullying of any level, but to witness it in public like you did, is very low :mad

    I think, that was long ago... Actually today the situation has changed greatly. Lenin is very often mocked at (poor old man, can't have rest even after his death:D). We're not Egyptians to mummify people, the majority thinks that he should be buried - we don't need SUCH traces of past anymore. BTW, people say, that some parts were so rotten that they fell off and 2/3 of his body consists of paraphine (I hope I don't misspell this word).

    And it isn't just the 'dominant' ones who act like that. What gets me are the people who come to America to escape something or to 'find a better life' or whatever, and then act like we owe them something.

    I was shopping in a local grocery store earlier today and ran across a group from Africa somewhere whom I have had the distinct displeasure of dealing with before. Today, i was walking down the right had side of the aisle and this woman almost ran me over with the cart. mind ou, there was no one else in the aisle and she very clearly saw me. I don't hold back much any more, so I turned around and said 'Thanks for taking up the whole aisle, I know I'm not skinny, but I sure as hell know I'm not that fat." She had the nerve to say something to me in her own language that was quite obviously rude (I may not speak it, but I do read body language very well).

    The thing is, they always act like we owe them something... they were ahead of me in line about a week ago and gave the lady a hassle because they were $.50 short after handing her a bunch of change and she called them on it. They hissed and stomped and generally acted like a bunch of babies and told the cashier that she should just ignore it. When she stood her ground, they sudenly whipped out a wad of cahs and paid her.

    And that doesn't even begin to go intot he BS I deal with working withthe Medicaid system. What really bugs me though, is that ovr the last couple of months, i have noticed that I am starting to get more prejudiced, and I don't like that. I need to get the heck out of dodge for a bit to recenter myself I guess....

    Sorry for the rant, didn't intend it to be that way

    Well, around here, the managers, who were counting the money, were derelict in there duty to secure the area. Around these parts, people get sued for talking that way to a subordinate. (I'm not kidding.) The girl could have gone to the labor board and complained that she was "harassed" ... because she was.. a different race, religion, sexual preference, what ever and she could end up with workers compensation or winning a law suit. We live in a very litigious society. And.. in theory.. we are all created equal and are to be treated respectfully.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Totally agree with your thoughts.
    There is a thing called respect for the individual which obviously was not observed by those arrogant persons. Regardless of status, education or class, respect is due to every person.
    Personally, I find such rude behaviour totally unwarranted and unworthy from any one human being to another. One doesn't need to have an education to know common courtesy and respect towards others.
    I know a good dozen of perfectly educated people who don't have any sense of human decency and respect towards others.
    Then such arrogance cannot be condoned nor excused in their case as they cannot plead ignorance! However, they are displaying simple stupidity by thinking that they are better than others!rolleyes
    Well, I agree with 100% of what you say in this thread.
    Mainly, the people I'm talking about are my mates from thу university. This is typical of some students to regard themselves as intellectual elite and look down on other people. They're not many, but there's such tendency here - definitely.
    My own university experience taught me that to be academically gifted, doesn't mean that some people aren't pig-ignorant in their human relationship skills.
    Some think education is a licence to act superior and put others down. Others use money, special contacts, or all of the above. Whatever - those who think the world is 'all about me', get their bubble burst sooner or later. I've popped a few Narcissistic bubbles, myself :D.
    LOL...Well, I (hopefully) expect they will get a taste of being a "pleb" when they start their careers...education or no, you still have to prove yourself once in the workforce, because degrees become just a piece of paper with fading writing...see how "elite" they feel then;)
    @Phantom re your comments:"Some think education is a licence to act superior and put others down. Others use money, special contacts, or all of the above. " Yeah. Pretty disillusioned lot too, I might add!
