I gotta agree with all this.
Under Canada's public health care, no matter what happens, you're covered. If you pay your premiums you cannot be denied medical care. I can't believe that someone would rather give their money to an insurance company that is more concerned with the bottom line or the SHAREHOLDERS, than with the concerns of it's clients.

How about you guys try this one on for size.

Health insurance is not provided by every job, and you have to make almost nothing to get on AHHCS.
My wife was self employed (realtor), making ~35-40k a year, for a family of three, insurance was around 450 a month. Then they raised it to 900 a month when the renewal came up. Now factor in a house payment. How about a car payment?
Thats before other basic living expenses. Unless you guys who are opposed to free healthcare have paid the full brunt of health insurance for an entire family, I don't even want to hear about how affordable it is.

We couldn't go with any other insurance company because my daughter has a heart condition. Most health insurance companies dont take pre-exisiting people with serious issues.

I've actually considered leaving the country for the very reason of free healthcare.

    True story.

I have severe sleep apnea. It cannot be cured, I will have it till my dying day. Unlike most caused by obesity, mine is caused by a problem in the brain.

I was diagnosed through several sleep studies, and it was determined that I needed a Bipap machine, not the typical cpap. What these machines do is force your airways to stay clear and open and force air into the lungs when you stop breathing. cpap is constant pressure, bipap is variable. The difference in cost between the machiens is staggering, cpap a couple hundred dollars, bipap, up to several thousand.

So I rented one out. My insurance company paid 90 percent of the cost, I paid 10 percent. It rented for 1k a mont( I know ridiculous).

Every month. Thats aftert the 1000 dollar deductible I had. to make it worse, everyone under my insurance had a 1000 dollar deductible, EACH! I chose the best coverage I could, through my job. This is the best I got.

On with my story. The company renting it told me that what would happen is that my insurance company would buy the machine eventually, being that I needed it for the rest of my life.

2 years passed. The company did not buy it. The cost of paying for it became that much tougher. So I called the company. They made it explicitely clear that they would never buy the machine for me. it got to the point I couldnt afford it anymore.

So here I am today, without a machine I need. Sleep apnea isn't an inconvenience, it shortens your life and increases risk of a heart attack greatly.

Am I biased and following popular opinion? Damn straight, because I've been directly affected by our bullshit healthcare system.

My Sister-in-Law was diagnosed with exactly the same condition over a year ago Adrynalyne, she was given the machine the day after her diagnosis, and has never paid one red cent(for the machine), she has her doctorate in administration/education and earns a fair salary. She pays her B.C. medical costs and Blue Cross extended Medical which I believe is about $250 @ month, if she had no job she would pay nothing and still receive the same care. But then our country doesn't launch numerous million dollar missiles, nor have the 20 billion dollar War Planes. Guess its a matter of prospective People Vs Power, think I will stick with my country that values it's people more than its own power.

I heard all the same arguments against Federal Medical Care here in Canada back in the sixties. The Doctors went on strike, the Insurance companies claimed Doom & Gloom, the Medical Care providers claimed Communism(oh Shudder), but the Government and the people prevailed and my Sister-in-Law does not have to suffer like Adrynalyne.

Do we have problems with our Medicare darn straight we do, and the government is spending billions trying to solve the problems. Most Canadians biggest fear is that the American system of Health Care for profit will come North.

I tend to believe that everything negative comment about our current administration is all true, and if anything doesn't go far enough.

It is my belief that this has been the most corrupt administration in the history of the US. Warren G. Harding previously had that record, with cronies being the rule of his day.

This president has fired the generals and admirals that did not agree with his assessment how things would transpire, and replaced them with people who agreed. Who was right in the end?

His reaction to the museum and other sites with valuable artifacts being looted? Who knew!?! Turns out lots of people knew, but he wasn't listening, as usual. He used to use the Who Knew a lot, I notice he's not using it as much.

And how about that secret energy policy meeting where only oil companies were invited? Of course that was Chaney, but then, I doubt the president wasn't involved.

To start a war with country you know didn't attack you, then use that as a reason so stay commander in chief? Mitzvah.

The list goes on, some of which is sure to stir a fight, so I'll leave it be. I don't like the current crop of presidential hopefuls on either side, but they would have to be spectacular to be any worse.

I had taken up caring for my brothers kids after his death, and was unemployed for several months (actually for 2 weeks shy of a year). I tried applying for CHIP (Children's Heath Insurance Program, the local state version) and was refused cold, no explanation. I found out later most of the money had been returned, a legacy from Bush. Fortunately for me and the kids we never needed it, guess if we had we should have just spent all my assets, and let them die.

I didn't like him long before he was president, before that he was my state Governor.

I am not saying the US couldn't do better by those who can not afford health.

I am saying that I do Not want my money going into a big pot, managed by the government (sorry, I think I can manage my money a lot better), and paying for those who CAN afford to pay for it.

    Medical welfare...a whole hearted YES.

Socialized and managed by the government...don't ever want to see it.

    They are here too.

Your daughter should not have to suffer because of the insurance companies policies. That is disgusting and I am sorry for that Adryn. There is no doubt that they are in need of fixing.

Insurance companies are what they are.. Would definitely benefit from governmental regulation.

Not trying to antagonize, but don't want the government involved, but you DO want them regulating the existing system?

Allow me to rephrase.. Government should be involved.. just not the ones making the decisions on who gets what. No need for micro-management.. set policy and let the people you pay do thier job.

The government has absolutely no say in anything with regards to the dispensation of the actual Medical Care here to patients in Canada. They simple unified care policy, controlled the spending(Big Debate on that at Times) and make certain that the Provinces(States) adhere to a universal plan. We have for that lower health costs per patient's, lower drug cost for patients plus guaranteed health care when ever & where ever we need it. Why do you think thousands of Americans come North for there medication and health care??

The argument that I don't want the government involved in business, is not too valid, when it is spending hundreds of billions on new weapons of War. And were Defence Contractors appear to be able to get what ever they want from the Government, and that the Health System profits from those that are sick.

Better that than weapons of war.

    Just my two cents.

I keep seeing people make the arguement that if we only had better health care, if we had socialized health care, etc, we wouldn't spend the money on defense or vice versa.

That arguement doesn't wash. One has zero to do with the other. I'm not trying to offend, but if you are going to make an arguement, you really can't bring up something totally unrelated. Or I guess you can, but it makes it not make sense.

I never said either way. Note I never said, diverting that money would stop funds being spent on defense, or in our case, offense.

Also lets face it, if the money aint there to be spent on weapons, then it aint there.

    Noted.

    I think I'm done.

Well, one more thing. The ideal situation would always be to not have to allocate money to defense (or weapons). Unfortunately, that will never happen...under any leader.

    Peace. ;)

Whats not true?I didnt say you dont have government subsidized medicine,I said the the government use age old stigmas as an excuse "or whatever is covenient" to stop or slow down any kind of money toward it hence the the point of the thread Bush blocking aid for children because-

The simple 'FACT' is private medicine isnt working, people who need help arnt getting it,even people who have paid for help arnt getting it because the Government cares more about the insurance companies than its own people, they have to,election campaigns dont pay for themselves;)

I'm gonna bring religion into this now haha:D Bush is a born again Christian,Jesus is his saviour,Jesus healed the sick, anyone who came to him regardless of money he healed WITHOUT CHARGE,it is the overriding message and one of my personal favourite bible teachings even though I'm not religious myself,so how can bush be happy with his countries hospitals and doctors turning sick people away?

I'd love to ask Bush why he isnt aspiring to his saviour,I think I know what he'd say,

"To many good docs outta work too many OBGYN's cant practice thier love with woman"

    :D

That has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with this discussion! NONE at all! Facts are great, facts make for good discussions but personal attacks have no merit.

People always bring religion into an arguement when they have nothing else to go on.

Being a product of someone who has been healed by prayer (go ahead don't believe me but it doesnt change the fact that it actually happened). Jesus did heal people but they did have doctors too in that day and Jesus never told them not to go to one rolleyes
