    This one has been around for as long as I remember, and I still reflect upon it...a little long, but imho, worth the read:

    Desiderata

    Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
    and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible without surrender
    be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even the dull and the ignorant;
    they too have their story.

    Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
    they are vexations to the spirit.
    If you compare yourself with others,
    you may become vain and bitter;
    for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

    Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
    it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
    Exercise caution in your business affairs;
    for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
    many persons strive for high ideals;
    and everywhere life is full of heroism.

    Be yourself.
    Especially, do not feign affection.
    Neither be cynical about love;
    for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
    it is as perennial as the grass.

    Take kindly the counsel of the years,
    gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
    But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
    Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
    Beyond a wholesome discipline,
    be gentle with yourself.

    You are a child of the universe,
    no less than the trees and the stars;
    you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you,
    no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

    Therefore be at peace with God,
    whatever you conceive Him to be,
    and whatever your labors and aspirations,
    in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

    With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
    it is still a beautiful world.
    Be cheerful.
    Strive to be happy.

    Max Ehrmann

    I hope you get as much out of it as I still do.

    Yep, I have a copy of this hanging in my office, and the Loo, of all places, LoL. Not as silly as it sounds, as you may surprised how many people have some out of the 'little house', and said "That's some great wisdom", and asked me for a copy. You could say I have a captive audience in there, eh. ;)

    One of many versions of the above:-

    LOL"Captive audience" huh?! What a giggle. Unique way of providing reading matter for your guests.;)

    I came across some of Max Ehrmann (a lawyer) writings and cases during my law studies. Though I had seen Desiderata previously, I had not appreciated the beauty of it as much until then. (I believe Max Ehrmann copyrighted Desiderata.) I've been quite taken in by this quote (your copy having different word(s) used), and still use Desiderata as a form of "staying in touch" on a lot of truths for oneself.

    Hope I don't offend either of you but when ever I hear that I always think of this Les Crane version which was part of an album in the 70's by National Lampoon called Deteriorata.

    Deteriorata
    (National Lampoon)
    (You are a fluke of the universe.
    You have no right to be here.
    Deteriorata, Deteriorata)

    Go placidly amidst the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof. Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep. Rotate your tires. Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself; and heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys. Know what to kiss - and when. Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do. Wherever possible, put people on hold. Be comforted, that in the face of all irridity and disillusionment, and despite the changing fortunes of time, there is always a big future in computer maintenance.

    (You are a fluke of the universe.
    You have no right to be here.
    Whether you can hear it or not,
    The universe is laughing behind your back.)

    Remember the Pueblo. Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate. Know yourself. If you need help, call the FBI. Exercise caution in your daily affairs, especially with those persons closest to you... That lemon on your left, for instance. Be assured that a walk through the seas of most souls would scarcely get your feet wet. Fall not in love, therefore, it will stick to your face. Gracefully surrender the things of youth: the birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan - and let not the sands of time get in your lunch. Hire people with hooks. For a good time, call 606-4311, ask for Ken. Take heart in the deepening gloom that your dog is finally getting enough cheese. And reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot, it could only be worse in Milwaukee.

    (You are a fluke of the universe.
    You have no right to be here.
    Whether you can hear it or not,
    The universe is laughing behind your back.)

    Therefore, make peace with your god, whatever you perceive him to be: hairy thunderer or cosmic muffin. With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal, the world continues to deteriorate. GIVE UP!

    (You are a fluke of the universe.
    You have no right to be here.
    Whether you can hear it or not,
    The universe is laughing behind your back.)

    roflmao Darlene, I adore your humour. No, I'm not offended...never seen nor heard National Lampoon's version called Deteriorata until reading your post here!... but having seen some of those movies, I can appreciate the comic irony of converting the beautiful poem of Desiderata;)

    Keep in mind this was in the 70's, we still used 8 tracks or was it 4? No computers, calculators were selling for over $100. Anything of importance came in the mail containing IBM cards with the little holes, hence the phrase (do not fold, spindle or mutilate, (or the computers could not read them). These were the people who started Saturday Night Live with The Not Ready For Prime Time Players, all crazys, loved em!

    [O.T.]I was a teenager, working through college in the mid-seventies (started @ 15). I remember struggling with punch-cards on mainframes (because that's all the computers there were). Had to use a thing that looked a little like a Bank-Card reader to punch the holes. A relatively small program took a long time. We had classes in Slide Rule and Log Books (Ugh!). A calculator was some thing that cost more than a week's pay, and add, subtract, multiply and divided, and maybe Square Root, and took up nearly a whole desk. Those were the days, lol!

    The 'Altair 8800' was the first P.C. It had rows of switches, lights and buzzers. That's all it did. i wanted one. But it was $500 a LOT of cash in those days).

    I remember the 'Do Not Fold Spindle or Mutilate' marked envelopes (probably still have a few). Times have changed, eh.;)[/O.T.]

    One other one from myself, Someone asked me about why I love doing hair, this was a music teacher, so I answered her thusly:

    Good hair is like good music. Each cut, each style is like an opus unto itself, a once in a lifetime, one of a kind creation. It is a true fusion of art and harmonies into a living work of art.

    Me

    PS: I know is sounds a little egotistical to quote yourself, but then again, I do occasionally come up with some good ones and I life to rememebr them. The one I was not going to include is my favorite from working at the answering service "I'm so evil, I make evil look good."
