How odd for a man who "invented the internet" to be a party to such factual errors . . .

Its so stupid using a film by a politician as a learning tool, the only films kids should see are made for schools from scientists.

Next they'll be handing out loose change as a learning tool to teach kids what happened on 9\11 rolleyes

Al Gore just won the Nobel Peace prize. No matter what you think of him, he is at least doing something to get people's awareness up about this instead of like Bush senior in the 1992 election campaign dismissing him as 'Mr. Ozone. As far as the 'inaccuracies' go, show me a school textbook that doesn't have some errors in it. I commend and congratulate him on his win, I respect the panel that chose him way more than a legal beagle mincing his words, who probably doesn't know his ozone layer from his a**.

Kind of ironic when he doesn't practice what he preaches. He says everyone should downsize their 'carbon footprint' and some argue the Gore's 'footprint' is b/c they both work from home....hello!? Down size your home or convert to solar power if you want to protect the environment and have so much $$ to burn.

    Quote from ABC news:

"the gas and electric bills for the former vice president's 20-room home and pool house devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, more than 20 times the national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours.

I have to agree with you Abby, he's a hypocrite! Though this still doesn't diminish the intent or the reality of the situation I believe. The message is good but the messenger drives a SUV, as do many folk for no apparent need or reason. It will always be the rich getting the perks, even if America goes communistic, there's no way around this. Greed.

Hey the only thing that Al Gore has done extremely well in my opinion is to be about the best self promoter I have ever seen. Inventor of the Internet, Vice President, now Nobel Peace Prize winner, hey no small feats. But like the "Old Horse Traders" I've met in the past, I do check out carefully the Horse that he is trying to sell me. With regards to his film I feel that it is not a Horse, but rather another creature with a nether region name that has four legs.

I really dislike the numerous people that have gained celebrity statues, by playing on peoples emotions, rather than quietly stating the plain and simple truth, even if it doesn't fit their own preconceived opinions. Where is the Old "Joe Friday" from "Dragnet" when you need him most........."Just looking for the facts sir, nothing else"

Like my father said prior to the Great Depression brought about by most people investing their life savings in the popular over inflated Stock Market. "When everybody else says its right Son, run like HE double L in the other direction, and you won't be caught in the stampede when they find out they were wrong"

I agree BC except for the fact that we're shitting into our environment at an alarming rate. I don't give a hoot for his personal endeavours, at least the message is out there. I want to know that my great great great great grandkids will have a good life.

Unfortunately he is wrong wrong wrong.

ALL the scientific evidence for the causes of any global warming point to increased solar activity, rather than human activity.

There was a MG thread, started by Rikky, about the counter film, Comrade Gore tried to ban instead of discussing scientifically.

    Communist America?

Unfortunately all this mis information is diverting resources from the real solution.

So I can say to my kids in the eventual fry up

My generation wasted all the opportunites to take appropriate action by barking up the wrong gore - tree.

So you're saying that we humans can't do anything? I agree if the sun goes so do we and everything else on this earth though perhaps the cockroaches will survive again. We're using/abusing all the stored solar energy that we have accumulated over millions of years in only a couple of hundred of years, don't you think that might have something to do with it?

Oh, my communist remark was just to say that all humans are greedy.:)

We're not always informed as to who does these scientific studies. Could be oil companies paying for this. I believe it impossible for the regular citizen to follow the chain of who is connected to who in the world of big money.

No I didn't say we can't do anything. What I said was a huge amount of resources are being expended on the wrong target. This prevents us using those resources to cope with the change - if it is inevitable which is just not proven.

In the UK any excuse is twisted by the beaurocracy to raise more revenue (taxes) for the exchequer.

This applies to speed cameras, ordinary journeys by airline, rubbish collection, water supply, private savings, house wiring regulations, house heating regulations.........

Unfortunately this is wrong wrong wrong. Or, at the very least, a mischaracterization of quite a few people's work.

I personally met the crew of a research vessel out of Denmark this last March.
They were trying to get water samples from around the world. They would be the first to get such a sample using uniform equipment. The goal was to determine how much CO2 would be released as sea temperatures rise.

They were also studying the effect of chemicals in ship's paint on sealife, and how that related to the first problem.

They firmly believed that global warming was man-made.

    From your link:

Funny how Mars is experiencing the same percentage global warming as Earth.
I suppose the martians are releasing large quantities of Carbon Dioxide from their oceans to cause this?

Actually I would rather believe that both planets are bathed in the same solar flux and reacting in a similar fashion.

Are we polluting the planet and should we clean up our act? Yes definitely.
Over 60 years ago some far sighted engineers, politicians and beaurocrats combined to start cleanup of UK rivers. With salmon now seen again in the Thames. Modern politicians are jumping on the bandwagon and claiming credit.

Is there long term global warming maybe, maybe not.
Is man the cause almost certainly not.

Should we investigate properly and prepare properly? Yes definitely.
Remember also that within the same timescale of the last warm period the Earth's magnetic field has reversed. Should we blame the ancient Etruscans for causing this? After all they were around at the time.
Should we be preparing for a magnetic field reversal?

Here's a nice write up to check out about the 'errors' in An Inconvenient Truth.

    http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2007/10/an_error_is_not_the_same_thing.php

Some noteworthy tidbits from the article:

"So contrary to all the reporters' claims Burton did not find that there were 9 scientific errors in AIT, but that there were nine points that might be errors or where differing views should be presented for balance."

"Unfortunately a gaggle of useless journalists have misreported this decision as one that AIT contained nine scientific errors."

That last one is precisely why I hate journalism. Many news articles covering science issues have errors because the journalist reported it wrong, whether it be because of ignorance or because it made for a catchy headline. Journalists have a huge responsibility to us yet they are unscrupulous or too incompetent to get the job done right.

I have no problem with gore or his movie I only have a problem with it being shown in schools, its too objective, there's no counter argument within the film, its not made by a scientist, its not meant for children who this may be the first they hear of the subject its meant to persaude the general public that his point is valid using visual trickery lick a 50foot long CO2 graph he can walk up and down and showing polar bears and seals dying.

Videos can be very powerful with the right video a vulnerable kids opinion could be slanted for the rest of his life as can an adults, what hope has he/she of being objectional after watching such a movie?

They should only be discussing the facts they have in the classroom IMHO.

I'm surprised that there is still debate about this internationally :confused

Everything I hear in the media these days in Australia is about trying to minimise our impact and correct the damage that has been and is still being done.

The scientific consensus over here is that we are primarily responsible.
We have accepted responsibility for our actions, and are hopefully on the verge of trying to do something about the greatest problem we have most likely ever faced.

The 'counter film' has been forcibly rewritten a number of times and has been exposed as being at the very least misleading.

As a country we have as much or more to gain from the continued use of fossil fuels as the majority of other countries. Our economy used to run on 'the sheeps back' it now runs on mining.

Maybe we are starting to realise that you cant have an economy if you do not have an environment to run it in.

Shoot the messenger if you must, but still listen to the message.

Turns out the school governor who challenged the screening of Al Gore's climate change documentary in secondary schools was funded by a Scottish Fuel and mining magnate who established a controversial lobbying group to attack environmentalists' claims about global warming. - linky
