Why is my PC slowing down?

Hi,

I've used this website a hundred times to get info but have never logged in or posted before. Hope you can help as my knowledge of computers is amateur at best.

I'm using Ubuntu. All been fine and good for a few months but the pc is suddenly running really slowly. When I was on windows this more often than not meant I had a load of spyware and running ad-aware or the like would get rid of it. I just found a thread saying there's no need to use anti-spyware with linux as it's not necessary. Is this really true and if so could you please explain why (in simple terms if poss!) and if that's the case then what else could be the problem? I've got loads of space left on the hard drive and I stop all downloads while browsing the net.

Erm... There is now something really rather wrong with my pc. It goes through the usual booting up process but then I just get a screen of lots and lots of little broken up ubuntu logos all over the page and no mouse cursor. Tried rebooting 3 times to no avail. Managed to get into Windows, it made a bit of a fuss about it-flashed the screen on and off and broke the images up into bits for a while-but eventually settled down and after double-clicking both firefox and IE icons several times over the course of about an hour have finally managed to get into IE to write this message.

What should I do? I guess I'll try and reboot again in Ubuntu shortly. I'll see if I can run a virus programme in Windows - will that show everything on both systems?

Any other advice greatly appreciated...

 

I have used ubuntu for almost 2 years i know you dont need any anit virus i only run fire wall{firestarter}.the only thing i can think of with your trouble is maybe you got a bad update.its never happen to me but i read about that on ubuntu forums. you might find out by going there. sorry i really could not help. bulldog
