OK, I'm basically venting here. I had my XP disk out for almost a week, and when I reinstall it (it's a removable hard drive bay) I get the yellow shield telling me it's downloading updates. Problem is, I haven't approved it (and my setup is supposed to ask, I double checked). Guess I'll wait until it is finished and see if anything shows up on add/remove programs, but does anyone have an idea what M/S is up to now?

There were complaints last week that MS forced WU files into their system and if updates were turned off, it turned it back on and rebooted the users machine with no warning. http://www.crn.com/software/202402001

That happened to me too! I had mine set to "Notify me but dont automatically download or install". The next day I see it yellow like you said and when I put my mouse over it it said "installing updates".

It happened to me a few days finally I just turned them off. I didnt get mine turned back on as stated in the article, thankfully. I didnt know this happened to so many people. I just go and select my own updates once a week.

I would suggest a 'Manual' setting for this service as it is required, even for manual updates.

Same thing happened to me, I stopped it, but I imagine it waited until I wasnt looking and completed
I would hope this is not something they plan on doing too often, but would also imagine they would not do it without good reason.

Its my computer, get your own Mr Gates

    What Mada said was correct.

    So, yes really.

Why hasnt anyone double clicked the yellow shield to see what is downloading??

That wasnt what Mada was saying though. He said he reccomended it to be set to manual so that you can install updates manually. He was correct in that sense.

    I do Auto Updates...I don't think I need spoon feeding...do you?

    :)

Was the question .....not about what setting you have.

Exactly ...so what is the point of all this discussion? Other than to have a pissing contest.
