Blue Screen of death

    Hi All,

    My PC came up with the blue screen today. (thank god for laptops) Heres the message that comes up:

    STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
    The registry cannot load the hive file (file):
    /SystemRoot\System32\Config\SECURITY
    or its log or alternate.
    It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

    Beginening dump of physical memory
    Dumping physical memory to disk: 15

    If I bring up the safe mode screen, all the choices lead back to the blue screen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Hi Tunered,

    We're getting there. The problem I'm having now, is that the SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION folder is empty so I cannot follow the rest of the steps. I tried following the steps here:

    Any suggestions. Thanks for getting us this far...so close, yet so far.

    update:

    Got through steps 1, 2, and 3 from the link that you provided. Now step 4 says that we should be able to do a system restore. When we go into system restore, it comes up a blank box.

    I can get into the program files, but none of the programs work. A box comes up saying "Windows Installer, Preparing to install..", but nothing happens, after a little while, the box disappears.

    Can anyone help?

    Is this a brand new install?, just reformatted, and installed?

    No, just had the problem of the missing hive file on the blue screen. I followed the link that you provided, got through steps 1, 2 and 3, but step 4 says to reboot and do a system restore. When I rebooted, and tried a system restore, a blank box comes up. Won't let me do it. Also, most of my programs do not work...a box that says Windows Installer comes up, but it never works, so I cannot use my programs. I also cannot get into User Accounts in my control panel. Is there a way to fix any of this?

    Hi,

    I went into recovery console, when I typed in md tmp, it says that "A directory or file with the name tmp already exists." Then when I type in the first line in your directions, it says "The system cannot find the file specified." and takes me back to the C:\WINDOWS>

    Any suggestions, I have no clue.

    Hi,

    I got into windows. Thank you. My windows installer comes up with an error message. "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are using Windows in safe ode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contack your support personnel for assistance."

    Also, I cannot get into the "User Accounts" in my control panel. When I click on it, nothing happens.

    Can you help?

    OK Guys,

    Now when I reboot, these are the error messages:

    Advanced INF Install
    Error: could not locate IND file 'C:\WINDOWSS\INF\wmp10.inf'

    RUNDLL
    Error in iesetup.dll
    Missinf entry: IEAccessUserInst

    HELP!!!!!

    MCD4X4, since you can boot into windows have you tried to revert back to a restore point before the problems occurred?

    Really, you are better off backing everything up data wise and doing a new installation.

    I want to thank everyone for your help. You guys got us back in, so we could back up the data and we are going to do a fresh installation as suggested.
