After PSU replacement PC cuts out....

P4 Dual core
1 Gb RAM
Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775
1x Cd
1xDVD
2xHDD

Had a PSU failure so replaced the PSU with an equivalent unit (Generic 400 W ATX P4 Unit)

PC now powers up (gets to successful POST everytime) and then within a variable timeframe of 10 - 30secs after that the power just shuts off. If I restart the PC it goes through the same motions.

The furtherest I have got is with it almost finishing loading XP.

Is this a PSU issue or something more sinister from the original PSU failure -ie something is cooked on the mobo?

 

What video card do you have? Exactly what brand and model PSU did you buy? How much did it cost?

Sounds like your new generic PSU doesnt have enough power, go figure?

Another thought, you may be overheating?

 

Answering both q's....

PSU old brand was "Hairong"
PSU new brand is a "K" brand - $25

Both are rated as 400W. How do I tell if the new one is not actually delivering 400W?

As for overheating, I actually don't have the case cover on at present so cooling would be better than usual.....

 

Try disconnecting the DVD, CD and your 2nd Hdd if there's nothing on it necessary to boot.

If it boots ok, you'll know that your not getting enough power.

And how far do you get if you boot in safe mode?

 

Tried this and it still cuts out!

Is the quickest/easiest way out of this just to buy a "brand name" higher rated PSU?
