The TV programme "Are you smarter than a 10 year old" has recently started here in the UK :)
I am aware that the show is aired in other countries around the world ;)

Some of the questions have me stumped  If you watch it, can you honestly say that you know all the answers (without looking up on the net!)

    For example:

    What is a 1/2 of a 1/2?

What is the Mode number of the following: 9,8,7,5,9,4,5,1 and 3?

In the Northern Hemisphere, in what month is the autumnal equinox?

What was the nationality of the first woman in space?

I can quite honestly say that I only get around 75% of questions right! Is this because children are smarter nowadays or just that I ain't too bright LOL

I see that you folks are having fun trying to answer the 4 examples i gave :)
The Equinox one had me stumped (still has)!

As more people will have a go at this, I have added some more from the US version ;)

    1. What is the largest South American country by area?

    2. Inca civilizations were concentrated on what continent?

    3. A heptagon is a shape with how many sides?

    4. Emma has 2 yard sticks. She also has a 12-inch ruler. She laid them end-to-end in a line. How many feet long is the line?

    5. True or false, the ostrich is the fastest bird on foot?

    6. True or false, the Earth's moon gives off its own light?

    7. How long is one regular term for a U.S. representative?

    8. True or false: A turtle is an amphibian?

    9. In the Northern Hemisphere, in what month is the autumnal equinox?

    10. If you have a gross of pencils, how many pencils do you have?

Kids are learning more at earlier ages, also this is their daily jobs (learning) so it's fresher in their minds.

The cute thing is, if you go ask those same questions to a 10 year old off the street, chances are they will get 75% of them wrong.

a gross is just 144 of something, anything really

    a gross of pencils
    a gross of donuts
    a gross of eggs

you would see it used the most with things you normally see sorted into dozens, like donuts:drool

    a gross of donuts...:drool:yum

To answer the original question, yes I am! As a single dad in my mid 50s with responsibility for an 11 year old daughter, it is my duty to remain "smarter" than her, at least until she is 16 (in the UK). I therefore consider it a challenge to be able to assist her in her in her schoolwork at least until University level.

What is the largest city in Scotland? Why are whales considered mammals? How many bytes are there in a megabyte? Who is the current President of the United States? If x - y = 6 and y + 4 = 9, what does x equal? These are just a few of the easy questions I get from time to time.

Doesn't being smarter than a 10 year old involve a bit more than having lots of useless information at your disposal though? I may have misunderstood the American interpretation of the word, but how do you equate "smart", as in the sense of "street smart", intelligent and knowlegable.

Sorry if I have brought this thread to a more serious level than was intended. I post on the back of a couple of glasses of red wine  and "mustard" is nick I have earned.

I'm sure they (the show) are referring to smart in an academic sense. Hopefully no one expects a ten year old child to have street smarts, even though there are countless who do and it is an important aspect of life. So perhaps by the time adulthood arrives there is a balance of both.
I never went far with my own education. When my children asked a question I said, " let's find out" not letting on I did not know. Ultimately we learned together, my children far surpassing me. For being a child producing children they all turned out to be productive responsible intelligent people. No one in jail, no one drug addicted, good parents, I am proud, I love them, I have pictures. LOL

This reminded me of when my children started a certain grade in school a letter was sent home to parents requesting we do not help with the homework (math) our outdated procedures would only confuse what they were being taught in school. :p lol

Does that mean I'm as smart as an eight year old :confused

If so that is good news, fairly certain I'm getting stupider every year - and loving it, life was much simpler back then ;)

So it's some of the most well educated children in the country vs. some average adults, am I right? Can someone tell me how this is supposed to be seen as fair for the adults? I can understand that the TV producers are just playing off the generation gap but how can you the viewers honestly expect yourself to compare to top of the class kids?

What do you think would happen if I asked those same kids questions they didn't know the answer to (Knowing that they wouldn't), brought in experts on those questions and made a TV series out of it? I'm pretty sure I'd end up with an "Are you smarter than a 10 year old?" Clone. People are so afraid of finding out that they're obsolete that they don't bother to realise that the best thing to do about it is to (GASP!) do something about it!:major

I take it you have not seen the show? One of the adults so called life lines ( can't remember the exact word for it )
is when they are stumped they can have one of the kids answer, then decline or accept the answer, which is sometime wrong.

I take it you have a point somewhere in there? So the kids are sometimes wrong, that just proves that it isn't scripted.

I posted earlier on this thread, but shurely if your kids can outsmart you it's time to crawl into the hole and cover yourself over. Parenting involves outsmarting your children.
