So having spent 3 years doing the knowledge and wearing the tread out on my boots (Oregon moutains are pretty tough now logging is restricted and brush is flourishing), I finally earned my stripes (or should that be camo colors?)

Went hunting with my son and husband for deer yesterday. Got myself a nice little bitty spike...good size body though - nice buck for a first kill. Told my husband I laid it just forward of the hind leg - he couldn't believe I was totally correct when we found it. One bullet. When the shot was fired everyone got on the radio trying to find out who fired - when I didn;t reply, they asked if it was me and over the radio came "Oh yeah baby......it sure was!" LOL

Today we went out again...just driving in to the unit and there stands a nice buck.....5 point.....or as southerners would call it, an 11 point (6 and 5). Pretty rare for a blacktail deer. Told my husband I laid it just behind the front shoulder - he couldn't believe I was totally correct when we found that too! One bullet.

No one else got anything this weekend :D In my husband's 39 years of hunting, he never got a 5 point :D

I do not think that this is the place to post photographs of your 'kill'. Seeing the dead deer is very upsetting to me and there will be others here too, I am sure, that feel the same.

Whether I agree with hunting as a sport or not, is not the point I am making, it is the fact that the photograph has been uploaded and put on public display that I am upset about.

You could have been a bit more tactful and posted a link, so that people had a choice whether to look at the dead deer or not.

The thread title says "Beware Bambi Lovers", so there was due warning.

I have to read bucket loads of postings here I don't agree with and that sometimes I find offensive. They usually do not come with warnings. It is not illegal to hunt (unlike the UK), and you get plenty to read before you have to scroll down to view the picture, so it is a choice. You know what you are going to see in the photos.

  11. Kodo

don't like it, don't look at it. There's tons of other posts to share on the forum.

A motto I live by: Those who are offended are often those who seek to be.

That's all I have to say. carry on.

Thats like burying your head in the sand :confused

The title is Bambi which is an affectionate name for baby deer. It was a family film (Disney). Of course any animal lover would be intrigued to see what it was about :)
If the title was ' Oh Yeah Baby - I shot a Deer' then I would not bother looking.

    Just my 2d worth :)

Prefixed by "Beware" which is a word of caution. So I assert, choose one of the thousands of other posts and do not let curiosity compel you; if you do, then you've no recourse but to question yourself.

I made no such command. I suggested strongly that out of the myriad of posts on the forum that ones including "Beware", bare word of caution and when in doubt of curiosity one might err on the side of doubt instead of curiosity or any grounds for complaint are subject to dismissal ala any one of the millions of similar warnings you might find on things like household cleaners where it might say "Warning: do not ingest"; I see no difference in this case.

    Your apologies are not necessary.

    OK...Grumbles, enough.

This thread, no matter where you stand on hunting, was meant to be about a positive achievement in my life, and everyone who wishes to share in it in that way is welcome. Instead it has become hijacked with argumentative and sarcastic input. It isn't often I start a thread in the Lounge anymore, for this very reason. If you don't like it, quit opening it and repeatedly offending yourself.

If you wish to negatively debate the ethics of hunting and how to post about it, start your own thread. This one is not the place.

    Thank you.

Its legal to mail i beleave all you got to do is state it on the box and make sure you pack it with dry ice and in a water tight cooler in the box ;) I know you can get mail order meat so this should be the same :D

You know i can't remember where i heard it but i have heard that deer are the most dangerous animals around they hurt/kill more hunters and drivers then any other animal;) and i beleave it.

I'm jealous for two reasons. One being I've not had venison in quite some time as I no longer know anyone who hunts since my dad no longer can.

The other is that apparently you live in a place where it's legal for a single hunter to kill more than one buck with a rifle! Here in Michigan, you may get one buck permit and one doe permit (but doe permits are limited). Any more than that and you are at least fined. Which is why many hunters are disappointed when they bag one at the beginning of the season (rifle season doesn't start here until November 15), because then they're done. Unless of course they bow hunt...you can get a buck with a bow and a rifle legally.

At any rate, enjoy your steaks! Don't suppose you go picking morel mushrooms also...few things better than venison butterfly steaks topped with sauteed morels and onions.

Dang, now my mouth is watering... :(

@NJ - I dunno....I would rather come face-to-face with a deer anyday than the big cougars we have out here.

@Sgt Tibbs - you make an excellent point and maybe I should explain before someone wonders how we do it. This year we bought a regular western Oregon rifle tag - one buck which has to be at least a forked horn - we buy this tag every year and it is available for any hunter to get. We also put in for our hare (anterless) tags (buck or a doe - anything goes basically) and we were successful in having our names drawn, hence we got a second tag each. So my husband filled his western Oregon rifle tag with a 3-point backtail (8 point to southerners); I filled mine with a 5-point blacktail (11 point to southerners) and I filled by hare tag with the little bitty spike. Still waiting for my husband to fill his hare tag - he has until Friday night.

    @MImsy...thanks for the congrats :)

    @Sibeer...well...errr...thank you :eek: haha

@Phantom....soak the clay pigeons in milk....helps soften them if they are wild ;)

Ouch! 6 shots? I bet she was "holy" LOL

I use a Weatherby Accumark 30-06, I've only had to shoot twice at one deer, the reason is because I sneezed when I pulled the trigger. Luckily I still got him, I like to bow hunt, makes it more challenging.

My apologies, M'lady . . . I mis-read your post. I thought your hubby bagged one of them. I stand corrected!

Yeah, mine was a 4 point. My brother said it counted as a 5, but I don't know how he got that (there is a tine broken off - but I think its too close to the left front point to really count). I didn't argue with him, though - after all, I did win the deer camp flag that year :cool

Once again, I apologize for my hurried and mistaken read of your post . . . I guess I just got all excited!

    I'm jealous!!

    I love deer burgers - but don't sell Deer Chili short . . . :drool Oh, my . . . I'm hungry. For that matter - deer steaks, deer pot-pie, deer . . . well, you get the picture . . .

but . . . I've got an old collapsable oven I found at a flea market years ago . . . you can make biscuits in it over a campfire or a camp stove . . . when I got my buck, we took some of the meat and chopped it up as fine as we could - fried it up with some bacon grease and made deer-gravy. Damn, that was one fine supper!! Biscuits and deer gravy. I'll never forget it.

Congrats Lev on your deer. I do know it is a great accomplishment and means a lot to you.
I do have to say, I love to watch them feeding in our fields out here in Mn. Bow hunting has started here, and rifle starts this weekend. My husband is very excited.
Me, I hate guns. But, I do know the deer population here is our of hand. They are everywhere and people hitting them with cars, etc.
There does need to be a hunting season. Hopefully my husband and daughter get one this weekend.
    Congrats again.

They have changed the laws in Alabama this year, for the entire season you can only kill (3) three bucks legally, one of which has to be 4 points or better. You can kill one buck a day, two does or one buck and one doe.

  43. Novice

Congrats on the deer Lev, and you're right, us Southerners would call it an 11 point. :)

  44. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Holy heck! By the time you've scoped and counted all the points to make sure, it'd be long gone LOL But I'm thinking this is the southern white tail system, so seeing 4 points is much easier than with the northern blacktail counting system?

  45. Rikky

Sweet Lev I want a gun:) I'd like to open the deer up and see what kind of trauma was caused internally I'm sure the super sonic rounds at that range would have stopped the heart dead for a quick kill, what gun are you using is that your 30/6?

FYI hunting especially deer hunting is legal in the UK,the same restrictions apply with seasons as in America, we can even buy a 30/6 rifle, even a .50 rifle just no handguns.

    What does deer taste like?

    Nice work:)

  46. evilfantasy

Must be by state and how large the deer population is.

Oklahoma is 1 kill during bow season, 1 during black powder and 1 during rifle season. For a "possible" of 3 total.

I used to know some people who hunted each year in Nebraska. The deer there are twice the size you see here. All of the corn fields make them grow very LARGE.

  47. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I was going to ask you about that, you said it was a 5 point, looks like 11 to me.:D

Here in Alabama, if you kill one like that, you brag all season, you take pictures until the taxidermist makes you leave so he can start dressing out. Once you're home you start saving to pay for the mount.

How much does it cost out there to mount a deer? (Shoulder Mount)

  48. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Oh it's a brag here too...and believe you and me, I HAVE been :D..my husband has never shot a 5 point (11 point) in his 39 years of hunting. I have hunters all over the counbty here envious ;) Our son-in-law is a taxidermist. He charges $360 for a shoulder mount, and yes, it is getting mounted. We don't count the eye guards here for starters, then it is max points on one side for the pointing system. Hence the difference :)

@ Rikky...yeah that's my 30-06 alrighty. I could post up the photos of the damage for ya ;) The spike was a gut shot...eww...nice and stinky. The 5 point was a lung shot. Neither got far...quick and clean. Deer tastes like.....err.....deer. Certainly over here they are not gamey or fatty. It is a dark meat, but sweeter and lighter than beef, and not half as chewy. Rarely do we need to soak it in milk or tenderize it. We just got done vacuum selaing them both tonight. New freezer is full and both had only one small bowl each of waste.

@Evilfantasy - here you can get one rifle, one bow and then it is totally dependent on what other tags you are successful in drawing. Same with elk.

  49. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

I bet, when hunters see someone else kill a big deer, they will try so hard to kill one bigger so they can brag.

My mom killed a 10 point last year, and I promise you it was the same deer I shot at and missed because my scope was a little off and it was about 500 yards. To this day, she don't believe me about it, she says "You're just jealous". lol

That's about what they charge here for shoulder mounts. The last one I had mounted, I think it was $345.

Ah! If it's longer than a half inch, it's counter down here. :D

There was a 14 pt. killed last year, needless to say it was in every newspaper in all surrounding counties.

  50. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

You are talking whitetail though, right? Which are bigger deer anyway.
