I have tried to run my defrag twice today and am getting this odd error I know nothing about:

    http://i22.tinypic.com/15nn86s.gif

I have entered "C:/chkdsk /f" in my run and getting another window saying:

    http://i21.tinypic.com/2ntz38i.gif

I did select "N" (no) because I really don't know what this is and am hopeful somebody can direct me as to how to fix the defrag error I am getting.

    Please help.

    Thank you.

Ok, the way 2K/Xp/Vista works, you gotta have the disk unmounted before checking it. All you have to do is say yes and reboot your machine. It will start checking.

Thank you. I will select "Y", reboot and try the defrag again. I'll let you know how I make out.

    Thanks.

I ran the chkdks /f in the run thing... selected "Y" in the next option that opened and rebooted. Once my computer loaded, I tried to defrag and again am getting the same error message as above:

    http://i22.tinypic.com/15nn86s.gif

Is there anything else I can try?

    Ok--chkdsk didnt run before login?

    Try chkdsk /r this time.

  6. mystique-topaz

Okay, thanks. I'll try that now. Then reboot and come back with news.

Just before I leave this time, I just wanted to make sure you know what I am putting into the "run" thing and I put the stuff in the quotes below:

    "chkdsk c: /r"

    Correct.

C: should be implied, but if its not, then yes that works.

This time before windows loaded, I got a full blue screen which looked like it was going to diagnose something? In the text part it said something about not being able to open something. I can't remember the exact wording, but it appeared not to be able to open what it was programmed to open?

I then proceeded to the defrag button and got the same error message. I really don't know what to do.

Could it have been autochk.exe that it couldnt open?

I'm not sure what it was :(

I found this feature when I check the properties of my c drive:

    http://i23.tinypic.com/33c2pog.gif

Its been doing its scan now for about 3 minutes or so and I have checked the second feature there. It didn't look like I could harm anything by this feature so thought I would try it and see if it would do anything because the defrag is in there.

    *couple minutes later*

Unfortunately that too got an error. See below:

    http://i22.tinypic.com/348r776.gif

Since that option failed me, I selected the first box there and got this message:

    http://i23.tinypic.com/j6k4mb.gif

It sort of reminds me of what I have been trying to put in the "run" thing? I did check "yes" and will reboot again.

Its going to boil down to the same result encountered before.

    Wait, wait, wait...

My post 9? When I ran that checker thing, and selected the second box, its stopped at the phase 2 when I got that error. This time, I didn't select a box, just clicked the go/start there and it started scanning, phase 1, phase 2 then all the way through phase 3 this time. AND, I got the following:

    http://i21.tinypic.com/2mpg3gg.gif

It specifically says "Disk Check Complete" this time. Woohoo. So far so good. What step should I do at this point?

I went to the dos prompt feature and did the following:

So far so good, if it fixed your problem :D

I could only wish. I tried the defrag and am in the same boat as before.

I did that check box thing again with the second option and it again failed the test. I dont know what it scanned by not selecting a box, but after checking the box this time, it again failed.

I appreciate that. I'm going to venture out and get myself an extra large triple-triple from Tim Hortons. I think this may turn out to be a long one for me.

    Ok, think I got it.

    Are you using Norton Antivirus?

  23. mystique-topaz

    mystique-topaz Private E-2

No. I do not have Norton on my computer. I use AVG and also have Spyware Doctor. Once in awhile I'll run Ad-Aware Personal, but my other two usually pick up the nasties.

What about Zone Alarm? If you have ZA installed, make sure it is fully updated.

Does Spyware Doctor run at startup? Try disabling it and see if it makes a difference.

When you bring up task manager, what is running?
Have you tried booting in safe mode and defragging? Do you get the same results?

  28. mystique-topaz

    mystique-topaz Private E-2

My Spyware Doctor automatically loads when I boot up my computer, if thats what you mean.

I have just now unchecked the box for it to start at start up and have clicked on the apply box. I will reboot and let you know what I get in just a few minutes.

  29. mystique-topaz

    mystique-topaz Private E-2

I have rebooted and Spyware Doctor did not load. I tried the defrag icon and only achieved the same error. I clicked the link to this thread in my email and the spyware doctor window popped up wanting to know if it should be enabled. I said yes. I went back into the options in SW doc and put the check mark back into that startup box.

Actually there is a ton of stuff in there that I know nothing about. I recognize a few of them, but not most. I'll try and screen shot it, but it might take two or three captions:

I tried a safe mode boot early yesterday. I got a black screen with a ton of data on it. It looked like was doing a scan? I went for dinner, watched about an hour of television and the screen never changed. It must've been a good 1.5 hours in this position. The monitor didn't look like it was changing and I thought maybe it was frozen, so I pressed the power button to get out of it. I could try the safe mode again, but I would prefer to only do that when it can run throughout the evening and into the morning if possible, if this is what it is suppose do?

Look to the right for BootExecute

What does it have for a value?

    This is done from regedit.exe.

I'm sorry but I don't understand any of this post or how to do what you're asking.

  33. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    You will.

    Start, run, regedit.exe.

Its in a tree format, follow the path listed in my previous post. Once you highlight the Session Manager folder, look to the right pane for the value mentioned.

    I can't emphasize this enough.

DO NOT CHANGE ANY VALUES WITHOUT CONSULTING ME FIRST!

Thank you for the easy-to-follow instructions. I only ventured to that area and then took a screen shot. How do I tell how much the value is?

    Therein lies your problem.

    Lets fix it, shall we?

    First, go to File, export.

Give the backup a name and save it somewhere it can be found.

Double click BootExecute to the right.

In the value field, edit it to look like mine in the screenshot provided.

Once you are sure its correct, close the registry editor and reboot.

    Attached Files:

    mystique-topaz Private E-2

I exported that particular file to my desktop and called it geek. It is now an icon on my desktop and says its a "Registration Entries" when moused over. CHECK

I went into the original file now and changed all that wording and it is now worded exactly how your attachment is. CHECK

I am sure they are now identical (mine and yours) CHECK.

I have just now closed the registry editor and am rebooting.

I'm getting the same error message when trying to run defrag. :(

I went back into reg edit and captioned the screen. At least they are identical now.

If I cannot solve this tonight before I retire, I am going to try that safe mode thingy again and let it run all through the night. The last time I tried this, it ran for well over an hour so I presumed it was frozen and hit the power bar. Maybe its so boggled that it needs a few hours to sort itself out in safe mode? I dont know.

I've been to that link before, but didn't see anything to download?

When you say "Run with this switch...", do you want me to plug "chkntsf /d c:" in the 'start' 'run' thing? I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
