How do I delete identified viruses?

I followed the Malware Removal Guide and found viruses using the Active Scan and the Bitdefender scans. Counter Spy found nothing. I have attached the logs from those two scans. Let me know if you want the "runkey" or "shownew" logs.

btw, SpySweeper found something called "Matewatcher" which it seems to have quarantined and deleted. Was that Malware?

While my computer is not showing any specific problems, sometimes it can be slow. (the maintainance guide helped).

I would appreciate help in deleting the identified viruses.

    Thanks

Thanks for getting back to me so soon.

I did follow all of the steps in order and as best as I could. I now include the other logs. I just ran HJT and post that log as well.

Note, I was able to run counter spy, but nothing was found and it did not give me the option to create a log.

Did you purchase CounterSpy or Spy Sweeper? If not, please uninstall them and then continue.

First, please disable any antivirus and/or antispy programs you have installed so they will not block this fix.

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and proceed.

    Step 2:
Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

    Step 3:
Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixme.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixme.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.
    Step 4:
Next Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    Note for IE 6 users:
    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites. For IE 7 users, simply click the "Reset all zones to default level" button.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

    Step 5:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Step 6:
Finally, I would like you to install the current version of Sun Java: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 7:
After you have completed ALL of the above in the correct order, please attach the following logs.
    • HijackThis Log
    • ShowNew Log
    • GetRunKey Log
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

All instructions went well. Here are the new logs.

Did this take care of those viruses that were identified by the online scans in the first logs I sent?

Also, any comments on the "mate-watcher" that Spy Sweeper (purchased copy) identified?

    Thanks again

First, have HJT fix the entries below. Also, the O15 entries are trusted sites, these we recommend be removed because it's safer to have no trusted sites to prevent any vulnerabilities than it is to have them set as trusted. It is up to you whether you remove these or not but it is recommended.

Can you elaborate a little, is it detecting a registry key/value or file/folder? If possible, post a log showing the detection.

    Does it not remove it?

I found the " mate-watcher" in the quarantine area of Spysweeper and removed it as part of the protocol under you Malware removal guide. (Purge quarantine folders). I just wondered if you have seen "mate-watcher" before and if it shows any residual effects in any of the logs I uploaded to you.

What would you like me to do after fixing the items you suggested?

Did you see that my original viruses have been removed? And, how do I confirm? Should I do another set of scans?

    Thanks

Ah! I thought you meant SS was still detected "Matwatch". It's very difficult to know what file belongs to what infection however as long as they are filtered from the legit files and removed it all works out.

The particular spyware infection Mate watcher is a spyware program that logs keystrokes and monitors user activity on an infected machine.

If SS said it removed it, then I wouldn't be worried. I would however update the definitions for SS and run a full sweep just to be sure nothing remains.

The "mate-watcher" seems to be gone after updating and re-scanning with spy-sweeper.

I completed the other items for "Hijack This" which you asked for, and I include the new log.

Now, back to the original logs from my first post. There seem to be viruses attached to emails in backup files from Outlook. (see log from Bitdefender scan in first post).

There also seems to be a cookie that was identified by Active scan (see log in first post).

How do I deal with these two items?

    Thanks for your help.

I would delete the e-mails in question. Delete the two e-mails with the subjects below.

Once you have deleted these, I would go thru and delete any unecessary or old e-mails just to cleanup the account.

Also, if you like you can download and run the Removal Tool for this WORM.

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixSbr.exe

Running ATF Cleaner will address this detection, it's not really an infection as cookies are harmless.

The items, along with old emails are deleted. Thanks for your help in all of this.

One thing that I noticed after making the "Hijack This" corrections you suggested on 11/02/2007 was the boot time increased by about 30+ seconds. Any suggestions on what might account for the longer boot time?

    Thanks

Those were unecessary startup entries, removing these will speed up the initial boot. The more items that load on startup, the slower the system boot will be simply because there is a lot going on behind the scenes.
