Hi everyone. I saw a couple similar threads, but they didn't seem to help mine. O.K. this is creepy. It is a desktop, and homemade. I finally figured out that I didn't forget to turn it off a few times, and that it has developed a mind of it's own. I don't want it to wind up doing this: :) Anyway, in the BIOS, I made a change which didn't help: I changed "wake up on LAN" to off. I don't recall what I might have done that would cause this. When it turns on it does it at totally random times. I checked AVG (anti virus, and a few other programs) to see if I had it set differently, and nothing. I have started to unplug it, between uses, but now and then I will forget. Also, one night after I plugged it back in, but I didn't turn it on yet, I heard a faint clicking sound from it. The clicks were about 1.5 times per second. I haven't heard that since though.

Obviously any help will be great!

I'm using THIS board, (I needed the ISA slot) Pentium 3.4, 4 Gig Patriot DDR Ram, 2-Maxtor SATA 300 Gig drives, (non-striping) Win XP Pro - SP-2 with all Win upgrades. Comcast cable modem, with firewalls of course. If you need any other info, feel free to ask! :)

    Thank you very much!

I had a computer that I was given, do this to me last year. Every night at 9pm, it turned itself on - very weird. At first, I thought I had forgotten to turn it off but when it happened a few times, I got suspicious.
In the BIOS, I looked for something like this
Wakeup Alarm also know as Resume on RTC Alarm
It had nothing to do with LAN or WAN because at the time, this computer was not connected either by a modem or ethernet to anything. It was a standalone computer until I could get it secure. I even thought that maybe the tv remote was turning it on.
If you can't seem to pinpoint the cause, attach the power cord to a surge suppresor and shut off the surge suppressor. It hasn't turned itself on in more than a year. :D

My computer was doing the same thing. We found that the processor fan had failed and the mb shut down every time the processor got hot.

    Check the processor fan.

Hey Thanks a lot you two. At least it doesn't shut off by itself. I'll look in to the bios again. Meanwhile, if anyone else has some suggestions, I'm all ears.:)

Also make sure Hibernation is turned off if you have it.

    Control Panel
    Power Options
    Hibernation Tab
Make sure there is no check mark in Enable Hibernation

Right click on desktop>properties>screensaver>power>And see if "turn off hard disk" is Never.

I checked the BIOS again, and I found, "Wakeup by P.C. card" was on. I just set it to off, and my bet is that is the problem. I'll let you all know in a few days.

    Thanks again everyone.
