    Any thoughts anre most appreciated.
Now the whirring and some grinding sounds are less, but the computer frequently simply turns off and then comes back on again. I already reloaded the OS (Win XP) but now I am really confused. Could a HD going bad cause that kind of problem?

open the case up and make sure its not the cpu fan or if your chipset has a fan check it also .

Absolutly check your CPU fan for working and for being full of dust as a PC that shuts down at random times is a sign of heat issues.

TONS of dust. Dusted it out, cleaned inside the tower, etc. I would love to have that be the source of trouble.
