    Hey there,

My laptop is infected with Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon.Saz according to F-secure (I think F-secure uses Kasperskys antivirus module).

Every startup the virus creates the file cscript.dll in the system32 directory to which f-secure prompts me to tell me the virus has been deleted.

I assume there are registry entries that the virus scanner cant pick up.

Anyone know of a removal method?

I've tried many different anti virus packages, most don't even pick up on the cscript.dll infection.

I googled Hupigon.saz and all I got back was links in chinese...other variants are in english but don't seem to apply to the .saz variant.

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifWhen you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy Log - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • AVG Antispyware Log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • Bitdefender Log - from step 6
    • Panda Scan Log - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis Log
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

From now on, ATTACH all of your logs, do not post them inline unless requested to.

    Let's start by running ComboFix...

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Once you complete the above, attach fresh logs from the below.

    • GetRunKey
    • ShowNew
    • HijackThis
    • ComboFix

First, please disable any antivirus and/or antispy programs you have installed so they will not block this fix.

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and proceed.

    Step 2:
Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

    Step 3:
Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixme.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixme.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.
    Step 4:
Next, we need to remove a bad service.

    • Now Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to WBNNMHJSMB
    • Then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteWBNNMHJSMB into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

    Step 5:

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Step 6: Begin here after rebooting from Step 5!
Next Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    Note for IE 6 users:
    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites. For IE 7 users, simply click the "Reset all zones to default level" button.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

    Step 7:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Step 8:
Finally, I would like you to install the current version of Sun Java: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 9:
After you have completed ALL of the above in the correct order, please attach the following logs.
    • HijackThis Log
    • ShowNew Log
    • GetRunKey Log
    • Avenger Log
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

I don't see what you're talking about in your log however I do see another issue we need to resolve.

You have Norton & F-Secure installed, this is causing conflicts on your system so you need to pick one and uninstall the other.

I recommend removing Norton however it's up to you but it you do remove Norton please run this utility. Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) 2008.0.1.19

Once you have completed this post, reboot and attach fresh logs from GetRunKey, ShowNew and HijackThis.

Ok, The trojan is still there according to F-Secure, one thing I've noticed is that F-Secure loads, then malfunctions, the icon on the taskbar turns red with a cross through it, when I mouse over it says anti virus and spyware malfunction, then a couple of seconds later it seems to fix itself, then the resident prompt comes up with 'backdoor.win32.hupigon.saz has been renamed'...I have F-Secure set to delete any viruses...I don't know why this is happening.

You must uninstall F-Secure at this point before proceeding.

After you have uninstalled, have HJT fix the entry below.

We need to run Avenger once more, like you have been doing
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

First, please uninstall Windows Defender so it will not block anything.

Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of the below DLL file (if found) and then click the kill button.
    cscript.dll

After you have killed all instances of the above DLL under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLL, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL file (if found) and then click the kill button.
    cscript.dll

After you have killed all instances of the above DLL under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLL, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL file (if found) and then click the kill button.
    cscript.dll

After you have killed all instances of the above DLL under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLL, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cscript.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme3.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Avenger again, just like before.
    Now run Ccleaner!

Download Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 7.0.0.125, save to desktop and install.

After you have installed Kaspersky, reboot and then update the definitions. Once updated, reboot into Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, open Kaspersky and Click on Scan and then on the left click on Settings.

Once the Settings has loaded, on the left hand under Scan click on the following items and change the Security Level to Maximum Protection. Also, under "Action" check the box "Do not prompt for action" and it should check the two boxes under "Disinfect" and "Delete if disinfection fails".
    • Critical Areas
    • My Computer
    • Startup Objects
    • Rootkit Scan
Once you have set the settings above, click Apply and OK.

Now click on START SCAN and let it scan. It will take a while to run but let it run. Once the scan has completed, there should be an area to right click in and select "Save As". If possible save the log and attach it.

Attached is the kaspersky log, It did a clean, found the trojan but every startup it returns.

It's almost as if the trojan's been written to a rom chip or the bios...it'd have to be pretty darn small though. Is it possible that malware can 'flash' your bios and put itself there instead????

I don't have an anti-virus installed at the moment, do you want me to keep my system free of an anti-virus scanner for the moment or should I reinstall F-secure (I tried a couple of other anti virus solutions, they didn't even pick up on the trojan).

Yes I've purchased F-Secure, here are the new logs.
Unlocker said cscript.dll wasn't locked to anything.

Other than that avenger works fine, maybe the trojan is propagating itself from somewhere else?

Cilck Start > Run > type msconfig and check the box next to "Normal Startup" and press enter but do NOT reboot.

Attach a fresh HJT log once complete, again do not reboot yet.

Also, see the below two threads and run them exactly as they state and attach two fresh logs once complete.
