According to this website, setting your page file to anything larger than 250MB doesn't help your computer any.:confused

Personally, I set my pagefile to default. I use to "optimize" my ram via running a bunch of apps and a game, then checking my overall usage, then adding a bit, then setting this as my pagefile.

But, not anymore. Why? In my setup, I didn't really see any real benefit. Just my humble opinion.

I have 2 gigs of RAM in my laptop. MS recommend 1½ times RAM as your page file. In my case that would be 3 gigs of hard drive space. I have researched my usage over aperiod of time and have reset my page file to 500 megs only. A saving of 2½ gigs of hard drive space (and still all not used). Everyone's requirements and usage are unique.

Download and install System Information for Windows at http://www.gtopala.com/ This will allow you to monitor your pagefile usage. Set it to the MS default of 1½ times RAM to begin with.

Run it for a few days as you usually use your PC and check out Pagefile size versus In Use and Max used. Add a few hundred megs to Max Used size and this should be enough. You can always alter the pageFile size at any time. Check out my thumbnail, attached.

I'm still experimenting with the page file thing. Right now, I have it turned off. My PC seems to be running fine. I had it set to 256 MB; and I was burning Media center video file to DVD, and I got the BSOD about an inpage file error. One website said that if you have 2 gigs of RAM, you don't need a pagefile. I plan on burning a DVD today to see how it goes. Logically, you would think RAM movies memory faster than the HDD

Let us know how this goes. Some reports say you still need a pagefile even if you have 2 gigs of RAM. I have 2 gigs and a pagefile of 500 megs, and the pagefile gets used so I have never deleted it. Bazza

Removing the pagefile doesn't stop Windows from paging the memory. You can actually hurt performance by removing it, anyway.

So, how does it page the file if there is no pagefile? And if the pc pages it any way, then how does it hurt performance?

Well, I finally ran into problems. I was using the avivo video converter and I got an error messege about there being no page file. The converter stopped working; and I could not launch any other programs either. I looked at my task manager and it said that 0 Megbytes were commited to the commit charge thing. So, I turned on my page file and set it to 3069, for the minimum and max. It is one fragment too.

I could get a 1394 IEEE flash drive and put my pagefile on it. My xps 200 only supports one internal hard drive.

I was converting a 7 gigbyte dver-ms file to an mpeg4 Divx file with a very high bitrate.

It might be interesting to not that when I had no pagefile, my commit charge was 1800 megs instead of 2000. Is that because it memory is reserved or because the 2 gigs are not true gigbytes.
