Sears IS Doing The Right Thing
I received this email form my buddy Fred.

SEARS supporting reservists called to active duty.

    -------------- Forwarded Message: --------------

Subject: Sears - Holiday/Christmas shopping has already started

Amazing, when you think of how long the war has lasted and they haven't withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year?

How does Sears treat its employees who are called up for military duty? By law,
they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being called up.

Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all called up reservist employees for up to two years.

Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution. I suggest we all shop at Sears, and be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so
the company gets the positive reinforcement it w ell deserves.

    Pass it on.

My ex-husband worked for Sears for 20 years. This is an ongoing practice even during the Viet Nam war. Although by all appearances it is admirable it is required by law as is the same for jury duty, any civil duty. I really don't mean to belittle Sears, just wondering if it was not mandatory if their policy would be the same. By the way Sears was bought by KMart not long ago.

The part of making up the difference in income and insurance sure isn't maditory, and significant. A lot of troops have been hit hard by trying to survive on military wages after being dragged away from jobs with decent pay, and have lost homes and marrages.

The only thing that is manditory it leaving the job open, and even this isn't being honored by a lot of companies.

You have to give credit where it is due.

The only reason i thought this was worthy of posting is the fact that i dont hear about other companys boasting about their support for the troops, there are surely others, i would like to hear about them too, would more than likely change my shoping habits. Thanks. ed

Good on Sears! They arent much for customer service (least in my area) but they treat their employees well, most companies arent like that.

Here is another example of Sears giving back to our troops. Heroes at Home is rebuilding and renovating houses for veterans and active duty personnel.

    Hello,

I'm new on here and so I thought I would introduce myself, before adding my two cents.

My name is Mike, and I just recently (AUG 2009) retired from the US Army after 23 years. OK... technically, THEY forced me to retire due to medical conditions after being wounded a couple of times... but who's being picky. Anyways, for most of my career, I worked as a Combat Medic, until I was wounded the first time and couldn't do that heavy work anymore, so they made me change my MOS (job) over to something else. I picked Finance (or Military Pay). For the last four years I have been working very closely with the Reservists and the Guardsmen who have been called up for Active Duty to far away lands. In fact, it was while I was in one of those far away lands helping out these Soldiers when I was wounded the second time.

Anyway... I have some bad news for America on this. The law only says that the companies must hold a similar job for these guys. However, a lot of companies at the beginning of this crap weren't even doing that much, in spite of the laws. Through a lot of effort by different organizations, laws were tightened up and companies were forced to comply.

Since Sprint, KMart, Sears and Wal-Mart started these programs that you are talking about, a lot of other companies have been following suit, or at least trying too. But there are no subsidies or anything for these companies... and they are not only paying the full package for the employee that is gone, but they have to pay the full package for someone to replace them until they are back (devil's advocate there).

Trust me, after spending a couple of years of working with these Soldiers out there, I've seen all of the financial problems and stresses that these guys have to put up with while deployed and away from their regular jobs. Crap that these mighty troops should not have to be worrying about while in a freaking combat zone serving thier country!!!

I will shut up now :) Thanks for listening to me rant :) Or even for ignoring me :)

Thanks, MadDoc, I was going to explain the same thing. Mandated law states the company has to HOLD the position for the deployed. It does not state anywhere that they have to make up the difference in pay. Sears needs to get a standing ovation for their support of our troops!!

Well done Sears! They sell damn good tools, also!

Now if only G.E. and other giants would step up to the line . . .
