Let me first start off by saying, I am no computer fool. I built my own machine, and know the ins and outs of it very well. I am simply stuck with a stupid software problem, and I am not sure if it is a virus, spyware or just Windows media player being stupid from an installed program.

The basic problem is... I downloaded a file that had the extention FLAC which is a sound file encoded with a lossless audio codec. I was unable to play it, so I tried to download a patch so that I could both play it with nero showtime, and burn it with nero. The site escapes me, but I've downloaded patches for nero from that site before without problem. NOW here's the problem. Anytime I play an audio file, it either stops playing within 4 seconds. OR plays perfectly normal. HOWEVER upon closing windows media player I ALWAYS get a popup window that says "Cancelling inspection of files on device..."

It is at this point that my computer becomes completely useless for about a min or two because the window won't close, and nothing I click on opens or anything. I have just found out as I'm typing this, that I don't even have to try to play anything in windows media player. It still gives the message upon closing. By the way, I've already uninstalled, and reinstalled windows media player 11. Please for the love of God help me.

This really does not sound like malware, but if you really want to know that for sure you will need to do the below and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

you are right, it doesn't sound like spyware, I've done the read me first at least 100 times in the past. I did it this time as well, takes a long freakin time. I've looked at the logs, and I've found no instances of spyware. I thought perhaps this was a registry problem at first. But I have some new news about my problem. I have a 2GB flash drive that I use to transport files to and from work. This windows media player problem does not happen when the flash drive is not plugged in! I have only plugged it into a front side USB port, not one in the back, this may or may not make a difference, I will see upon my return home from work.

I transport AIFF files from a mac to my PC at home. I play them in quicktime, and not WMP but I'm wondering if the simple transition from mac to pc all the time has caused a problem with the drive. I plan to copy all the files to cd and then format the drive to see if that solves my problem. Any advice, I would greatly appreciate

Yes but the link I have you below is to a new and coming version that is MUCH MUCH faster. But since you don't have malware, it does not matter anyway.

I suggest that you post this in the Software Forum where it is more appropriate.
