Meh, it's just tit for tat, that's all. It's about time we started banning criminals from crossing our borders. :)

Guess given the state of the world nowadays, countries are really tightening up.

    Extract from URL:

"...It's not that Canada has suddenly revised its stance toward visitors. It, like the U.S. and most other nations, has long barred people convicted of serious crimes. Canada considers drunk driving to be "extremely serious," as its consulate's Web site notes. And it rejects visitors with convictions for shoplifting, theft, unauthorized gun possession -- and even dangerous driving."

No thanks. There's enough crims here, already. :eek

As said, it's just part of a post-9/11 world. Can't bring anything like the number of personal items in/out, either.

Let's see... world wide terrorism at a 25 year low... and yet NOW we need tighter security?

The only way it is anything to do with 9/11 and "the state of the world nowadays" is that since 9/11 half the population of the world have become brain-donors and believes the hype that Achmed is going to blow us all up if we so much as think the words "civil liberty".
The sooner the common man wakes up to reality and tells our incompetent leaders to "get bent", the better - until then, this kind of thing will kep happening, more and more often, for more and more trivial issues.

However - I do share their view of DUI as a "serious" crime. I don't like the idea of punishing people for crimes comitted in a young and stupid youth (who's perfect?) though, and that includes DUI. I wouldn't fall foul of this law, but from my reckless younger days of driving fast and the whole traffic light gran prix, it's very likely i could have been convicted... it would be pointless to ban me from a country purely because of that as quite simply, I never drive like that any more.

I'd laugh till I choked if they denied George Bush entry to Canada though... what with him pleading guilty to DUI some time in the late 70s. That wasn't young stupid youth either... he was about 30 at the time!
Let's not hold our breath on that one though - I predict swift passage through Canadian immigration for Bush next time he heads north of the border.

    Madness.

Aw, come on Lev...Being deported to Australia were often the poor and illiterate, victims of the Poor Laws and social conditions in Georgian England. Eight out of ten prisoners were convicted for larceny of some description.

There were also political prisoners and prisoners of war, as well as a motley collection of professionals.

The average age of a transportee was 26, and their number included children who either were convicted of crimes or were making the journey with their mothers. One in six transportees was a woman.

Tickets of leave were normally granted after a certain term of years dependent on the length of a sentence. The principal superintendent looked at the applications and depending on how much extra punishment the prisoner had received he'd make a decision to recommend the ticket or not.

A ticket of leave would exempt convict from public labour and allow them to work for themselves.

After this, a prisoner may receive conditional pardon, which meant he was free but had to stay in Australia, or absolute pardon, which meant he was free to return to England.

Many who stayed on in Australia now have descendents who in their own way are proud of their family history...particularly those from descendents who were victims of the Poor Laws and social conditions in Georgian England.;)

I think its too harsh,I also agree this has nothing to do with 9\11,DUI? Islamic extremists don't drink:)

People make mistakes pay their debt to society and move on,stopping them going on holiday violates human rights IMHO.

There's always going to be spin. There's always going to be flatulent rhetoric. Web stories, blogs, and other mass media mechanisms compete with each other for your attention. They do that most effectively by inciting your emotions. So-called "News Agents" rely on their reader's trusting nature and the belief that "News Agents" tell them the truth, without manipulating it. Unfortunately, "truth" in the media is spun from raw facts, to incite one group to distrust another group, in a manner that suits the author's agenda. If you were to be presented with the same raw facts that the author used to present the story, you won't necessarily arrive at the same "spun truth" that the author has constructed for you. It is a fact, that every country, that values it's national integrity will impose border restrictions. Canada, historically has been lax, in this area, and has been sternly scolded, not only in fierce diplomatic language, but US politicians have used this fact to berate Canada publicly, and to aggrandize their personal standing in a post 9/11 world. Canada hasn't changed any rules. All that has happened, is that our border guards have been told to enforce them. Just remember that the government of the USA has been strenuously insisting on this course of action. My advice to Fred_G? Don't let a bit of media hyperbole spoil a planned trip to Canada. Call/email any Canadian Consulate in the US and forward your particulars. They can clear your border crossing, in advance, if you are a minor DUI offender. And remember, Canadians don't mistrust you because you've been a criminal. However, your own govnernment insists that we do.:)

Canada is great if you like terrible winters, ice hockey and running into moose.
And Montreal can't decide if it is part of Canada or France.
Has Canada separated from England yet? Still part of that outdated totally useless British Monarchy? Hard to believe.

Hahaha, you've never lived here, have you? I find 100 degree weather horrible w/o A/C and I can't enjoy the outdoors in that heat, btw, the moose are only in the rural areas and we also don't live in igloos.;)

Montreal is a part of Quebec and the seperatist movement is dying down of late. They actually were thinking of joining the US, as if you guys don't have enough problems

No, we're not, we repatriated our constitution in 1967.

I hope you learned a bit about us in this thread so that you're knowledge of us is upto date.:)

Well, I had to crawl out of my igloo, and thaw out my computer to post this, but it had to be said:

    WHAT A LOAD!!! :crap

Seriously, have you ever been here, or have you just watched too much Bob And Doug McKenzie?

    1. Winters aren't THAT bad.
    2. I hate hockey. There are plenty of fans, but it's mostly a small town thing.
    3. I've only ever seen a moose twice. My old man has never.

It's QUEBEC that often raises the issue of separating from Canada, but the idea has been trumped in referendum twice. I'd imagine the large english-speaking community in Montreal had a significant part to play there.

The PM says: "The real question is simple: do Quebecois make up a nation of their own in a united Canada? The answer is yes.

"Do Quebecois make up a nation independent from Canada? The answer is no and will always be no."

Are we a part of the monarchy? No.
We do have a governor general appointed to represent the queen (same as 15 other commonweath countries, btw), but she has little to do with everyday politics. We have a constitution, and an independent government. What's the big deal about a nod to the monarchy?

I suppose we could put someone else's face on our coins if we did. That is a little archaic and silly. rolleyes

EDIT: AHAHAH!! Augie beat me to it!

You know what always astounds me is the fact that the rest of the world learns so much about the United States, and yet most Americans know so very little about even their own neighbours. Such a shame that the worlds strongest military power knows so very little about what the rest of the world feels, and maybe that is what contributes to the animosity that some of the world feels towards the U.S.A.

The greatest war machine can never protect those that have little knowledge of there friends or foes. Knowledge and understanding are the true road to power, but alas that seems to be lost on some in power now. That is such a shame because the United States is a great nation filled with many brilliant and talented people.:(:cry

They want to ban people for traffic violations and getting busted for a joint when the US is awash in Canadian pot?
An old cynic like me thinks it has more to do with the dollar devaluation.

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Hehe, from one old cynic to another from across the border that hardly one crosses here through either way compared to the other end of the States.;)

First of all, drunk driving is not considered a traffic violation here, it's a suspension and/or jail and it's you who define a felony, but having a joint is basically a traffic ticket here. The US was so paranoid about people bringing in a few joints that they forgot the people that traffic tons.

I would love to see the pot traffic die as we get your guns in return. Hey, get your dollar into gear there, it's hurting our traffic! j'k
