I'm trying to clean up my neices laptop. When she gave it to me it would constantly try to boot. It paused on the blue screen and I could boot into safe mode, last known config, etc. so I reloaded WinXP. I then was able to get the OS to boot. I installed AVG & ran a scan. It found 75 Trojan Horse viruses! I also ran ccleaner. I wanted to run Spybot Search & Destroy but now I don't have internet access since I ran AVG. I've attached the Hijack This virus log. Any help would be appreciated!

I ran the combo fix, AVG scan and MGTools. The AVG log file is in an .xml file so I couldn't upload it. When I tried to find the info under test result (AVG) - it was empty. Do I have to run another report? If so, won't it miss all the original viruses? I think the other 2 files you're asking for are attached. Thx for your help!!!

If you followed the below link which was in the READ ME, it would be a text file.
    Running AVG Anti-Spyware

    Don't worry about it now.

No! ComboFix is correct but the other is not anything we ask for. You need to attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file from running MGtools.exe. The list of what you needed to attach is in the READ ME.

You need to run AVG Antispyware again and this time Quarantine or Delete all the problems it finds. There is no sense in running the scans if you are going to have the tools ignore the problems. Save and attach a new log.

Now let's fix your internet access problem.

    Download LSP - Fix

    Run LSP-Fix.

Check the Box labeled "I know what I'm doing" and then click on the winsck2.dll file (in the “Keep” section) to select it.

Then, Select the >> button to move winsck2.dll into the Remove section.

Now, click the Finish Button. When the Repair Summary box appears, click OK.

If it is already in the Remove section, just click Finish.

You have a lot of remaining issues and we will need to work this a few steps at a time. So I will give a couple more things to do in this message and them I will put the rest in another message.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton WMI Update"
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
Zango Toolbar <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Delete all the below files in your Windows folder
    Code:
    C:\WINNT\

Make sure you complete the instructions in message # 6 before doing the below!

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)

    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Okay - here we go: First, when I ran AVG Spyware I did delete the found items (I just saved the report before I changed the action to delete. Sorry!)

Second, the internet fix worked! THANKS!

Than I followed your directions for uninstalling the software (I did do most of them after I read your READ ME FIRST page. My post was before that. Again, sorry!) Got the correct version of Sun Java. Deleted the dump files in WINNT. Disabled the Microsoft Inet Service (couldn't find any other files to disable so I just exited). Ran HJT & Avenger then CCleaner (left all the default settings). Attached are my updated MGTools zip file & Avenger.txt

It's working better EVERY minute!! (My neice is an interior designer. Do you have rooms you need redone!!?? She OWES you! :D)

    You're logs are clean!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I cleaned up the files you mentioned but when I tried to do the Microsoft updates - I wasn't able. I was reading a LOT of info on the web about the Microsoft Update service not being able to be run after a WinXP SP2 repair (which is what I did orginally with this computer) but unfortunately every fix I tried - doesn't work.

Here are a few links to what I already tried: http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t427285.html (solution at bottom of page) and http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=817&page=1

I was hoping maybe you could help me with this last (I hope) problem.
