Hello I'm posting this in the hope someone can help.

On a freinds computer upon boot up he gets messages sayin certain files are missing from the system.ini or windows registery press any key to continue.
    The files are \symantec\symennt.386
    \norton~1\savrt.vxd
    \savrtpel.vxd
    symtdi.vxd

You press any key through all these and then the operating system loads

    (Windows 98 2nd edition)

I know this is a Norton problem but it looks as if Norton has been uninstalled some time ago. This problem has only just started occuring after a power cut!!.

1st thing I did was get the norton removal tool ( Wrong version at 1st ) the downloaded the correct version "windows removal tool 9x" which should get rid of all traces of norton and has always worked on any computer i've used before.

Upon trying to open this tool i get the following error message "This file is not signed so it won't run".

I have deleted the program and tried reinstalling it from a different location but still to no avail.

Can anyone shed any light on this situation for me.

I beleive the norton product that was installed was norton security suite 2003.

I have now installed Adaware for the spyware as well as AVG for the anti virus

    Thanks for the quick response

I've never used CCleaner before is there anything I should be aware of beforehand.

Yes i tried the link on nortons website first, couldn't even get the thing to download. I got to the page where you select the operating system you use then click on download and nothing happened, so i got the removal tool via another couple of link to the ftp site at symantec

Cheers steve I'll try this later hopefully all will go well. I have tried using the norton removal tool from the link you sent but i just kept getting "This file is not signed so it won't run". It's a bit of a strange error message which i've never really seen before. I personally have had 2 windows 98 pc's for about 6-8 Years and never come accross that.?

Tried Ccleaner the registry checker part deleted anything that showed norton or symantec but still getting the same error messages upon boot up.
Anyone got any more ideas or any more software to try to solve the problem
    Thanks in advance

    Sorry Steve my bad english

I have backed all the registry and deleted all the list. I then restarted the computer and the errors were still there.

I think that this will only work with later operating systems but i have dowloaded it and am getting two error boxes stating the following

    1st box
    c:\windows\desktop\norton_removal_tool.exe
a device attatched to the system is not functioning

    2nd box
The NORTON_REMOVAL_TOOL.EXE file is linked to missing export KERNEL32.DLL:GetVolumePatheNameW.

There are several things you can do. Run sfc/scannow, if you have your OS disc or a recovery partition. That will check your windows files and repair any or missing ones.
Or when using the reg cleaner ( I use RegSeeker ), search out ALL Norton AND Symantec references. (Be careful if you have any other apps installed from them)

Just for the record... as far as I know, sfc doesn't work with 98SE. I had a vague memory of having tried this for my 98SE laptop and it not working so I tried again and it definitely didn't recognise the command in a command prompt.

I'm not quite sure, I think that there are two ways of running the System File Checker in 98SE. One is from the System Tools and it might also be possible using a startup disk. I can't find anything to confirm my memories and I may be thinking of the extraction tool but I do remember clearly that one way of doing it expected you to know not only where the file was but sometimes there are two (or more) files in different cabinet files with the same name and you're expected to know which one you want. The other one had built into it the knowledge of which file originally came from where and saved you guessing or researching and hoping you got it right.

While I was searching around to try and confirm or correct my memory, I also found quite a few comments to the effect of the File Checker being a good way to muck up your computer in 98/98SE if you were a novice user.

So if someone who knows is able to confirm/correct my comments for the sake of accuracy and completeness, that would be good. :)
