FAH Crashes when WU complete

I am running the graphical client. When a WU is finished, my client crashes with the "FAH has encountered a problem..." error. I have to restart the client in order to receive another WU. I hope that the data from the completed unit is making it to where it needs to go.

So far this has happened on both WU's I have completed since installing, and I remember having this problem when I tried FAH on another machine a while back. I ended up removing the program back then because of this.

What information do you need to help me?

My first thought is the firewall. We need the operating system, which will define the graphical client (but give us that too). Basically the computer sounds like it is having problem reaching the standford web site to turn it's results in.

To check your results go to this site:

    http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=12072

At this time it is updating, but it should finish shortly.

XP Home w/ SP2 (firewall turned on)

I am behind a router with NAT (Netgear WPN824), however, why would it work at all if this were a factor?

Not sure. Might be difference between their software phoneing the result home, but I'll leave that to smarter individuals than me. Routers can be picky though, part of their job. So you're using Client 5.03? Just verifying.

Right click on the display, then click about to find it.

I honestly don't know why you're having a problem, maybe your log will give us a clue.

    To get to your log:

    Right click the FAH icon
    Status > Log File
copy the log file after the finish of the WU and paste in your post. (remove IP address & Computer ID info)

Mine looks like this after it finishes a WU and downloads a new one.

Also check the Connection Tab under Configure to see if Use Internet Explorer Connection Settings is checked, if so uncheck and click OK.
What is your user name for folding, we can check if your WUs have been recorded, also your logs will help in that regard too.

I believe this is your stats page

    http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=199935

if so, there is no mention of any recent WU's being submitted.

Not sure what the actual issue is :confused

Are you changing any of the settings ? (apart from username and team)

Have you tried using the 'text-only console' instead ?

First of all, thats not my team. Back when I was folding before, I was using the name Allochthonous on the Major Geeks team. Now, however, I am using the name Paul on the team 91193.

According to that stat page, I have submitted 4 WU's, which is right.

    http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userstats

    My log is attached.

That box is unchecked. Again, I would say that its my router blocking port 8080, but then why does it work when i start the client manually?

EDIT: I am going to change my name on this team to AllochthonousPK.

Don't see anything in your log, have you tried doing a clean install?

Ignore last post, look in your Event Log for an error associated with FAH, it might be memory related.

How to get to log if you need.

Not really up on memory but from what I understand FAH only uses available resources, so if at the end of a WU your playing a game or a program is using a lot of memory it would not be available to the WU to complete and send. Not sure why there is no error entry in FAH log, mine seems to log everything.

No, I am not doing ANYTHING else when this crash happens. Lately, this machine has been dedicated to FAH only.

A P4 2.8 with 512 MB RAM should be sufficient, I would think.

    Any other ideas??

    1. Did you look for an Application Error in the Event Log?

    2. Check Device Manager for any problems.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310126/

    3. Test your memory
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/MemTest_d350.html

Your FAH log does not show failed attempts at connecting to FAH server it's most likely not your router, log you posted had no errors.

If none of the above gives you any info, uninstall, use CCleaner to clean and fix issues, then reinstall.

Glad you got it resolved, having it open must also effect the log.

This may have something to do with any lack of detail in the log

    "-verbosity x
Sets the detail level of the output written to screen and to the fahlog.txt. Options are from 1 to 9 (max). The default is 3. Level 9 is helpful for diagnosing problems and helpful when reporting them to the F@h development team. Supported in client versions v3.x, 4.x, 5.x, 6.x."

Taken from fahwiki.net - How do I know what the client flags (-switches) are and what they do?

I have always used 'verbosity 9'
