My Nvidia 8600GT graphics card came with two DVI to VGA/D-sub Adapters. As I understand it, the two DVI-I output connectors on this card have output pins for DVI and VGA. A DVI cable goes directly from the card to the DVI monitor and an adaptor uses the VGA outputs on the connector to drive a VGA monitor.

Both DVI/VGA outputs on each connector work fine to drive various monitors that I have.

As to running a DVI monitor from a VGA graphics card, I would guess that is a problem, but three of my monitors have both DVI and VGA inputs, the others have only VGA.

In other words, A DVI monitor likely has an added VGA input and can run from either a DVI or VGA graphics card.

I'm not sure. I believe it will work with a certain type of DVI monitor. I see the product specs for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999504 say: "Converts VGA port into LCD/DVI port, works with most video cards (will not work with DVI-D Monitors)"
