When my laptop boots up it says it recommends a chkdsk is run, but it gets to 10% and stops, I have tried leaving it but it never gets any further, so I have to re-boot the laptop and cancel the chkdsk scan before it starts up!

    Any ideas?? :confused

    thanks in advance :)

    A couple.

How long do you let the chkdsk run?

There is a way to disable the chkdsk....with a few registry changes.

On a side note, do you have a usb flash drive installed, if so, this could be causing the issue. This includes MP3 players or cameras.

Left it for over an hour at the longest time I think - maybe even longer cos i just left it running and nothing happened by the time I came back to it...

this sounds good! Can I run it thru Vista to make sure a run has been completed??

no flash drive is installed or not plugged in at least!!??

Ah, so you have vista installed.

Before I go into the registry, does the hard drive light on the laptop light up, while chkdsk is running?

    I'll post anyway....

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

Within this is a key: BootExecute

The entry on a normal boot should be: autocheck autochk *

Click Start, then run, then type in: regedit, press ok. Click continue.

Before you do any changes, I recommend, backing up this key. Also, the above is AT YOUR OWN RISK TO YOUR SYSTEM.

On checking bootexecute I found that the entry was:

    autocheck autochk * lsdelete

I googled the LSDELETE bit and it seems that it refers to LavaSoft Ad-Aware 2007 - I have removed this part of the entry and re-booting the machine to see if this may allow it to complete its check, if not I will disable the function completely.
