I've just installed AVG Spyware on my XP Pro, SP 2 system. Should this be a start up item?

It will be, once you reboot the computer, and complete the Set-up process.

Yes, I realize that it is set up that way to be a start up item. However, it's slowing down significantly my start up process and was wondering if it's needed in that capacity.

    If it's the Freeware version..
... I would personally remove it from Startup.

One more ?, dr. m. I don't see a way in the programs themselves to delete them from the start up section. I know you can do it by unchecking them, but I've been told by chaslang of the malware forum not to do so. Many thanks!

You can use CCleaner -Tools/Startup to prevent it from loading on Boot, does not uninstall the appl.

Hope I answered your question. :confused

Thanks again. I saw that option in CCleaner but when it said delete entry, I wasn't sure if it would uninstall the program. You've cleared that up and answered my question.

Sorry, I didn't see that part of your post. "Delete entry" is the only option I show on CCleaner Startup.

Um, doesn't telling someone to remove an anti-virus from startup render it kind of useless?

    Jud149,
I wouldn't remove either of them from start up :eek

The AVG Antispyware does have the resident shield active while you are in the trial period. ;)
After the trial period ends, AVG Antispy reverts to being an on-demand scanner only. But if you want the real-time protection that is available during the trial, you have to let it start with Windows, otherwise all you have is an on-demand scanner. After your trial is over, then disable it from starting with Windows.

Likewise with your AVG antivirus. If it doesn't start with Windows, you're taking away the real-time protection that it would be giving you and turning it into an on-demand virus scanner, as opposed to real-time virus protection. And an on-demand only antivirus isn't worth :crap .

Always allow your real-time protection to start at start up.

Not if the OP is concerned about sys resources at start up. He can run it at any time he then chooses.

    Jud149,
You want to know how to remove it from your start up list by not using Windows, because unless you configure the program itself not to run at startup, it will think that you want it to and will keep giving itself permission. Therefore you have to use the AVG Antispyware control center, or preferences, or whatever it calls its settings to tell it not to. (I uninstalled my AVG Antispy as soon as the trial expired, so I'm sorry I can't be more exact.) Maybe someone who currently has it installed can jump in here.

:) The OP should post which AVG version of both.

I see the point you are trying to make, but IMO manually starting an AV every time you boot the computer is still pointless. Besides, what you gain when you disable it at startup you'll lose when it starts, in most instances. I feel it's an allowance you need to make.

    Solaris89,

I believe you were right with your first comment. I think it's really bad advice to suggest that someone should remove their AV from startup and then run it manually.
And wouldn't it be a nuisance every time you go online to remember "Well, I better turn my antivirus on now..."

And do we really think that people will remember to do it every time?
That's why you still see the occasional older vehicle driving in the dark without headlights... because they forgot to turn them on!

Are we to hope that the bad guys will only attack while the antivirus is active, but show mercy and not attack when it is turned off??

They're not likely to do that, and that is why antivirus are made to run full-time.

    Point taken.

I definitely would not disable an AV with On-Access Protection which some versions of AVG do not have.

    I'm sure you read this:
How to Protect yourself from malware!

The question might be what is starting up that is slowing your system ...and for that maybe you should use Startup Manager and tell us what is starting.
I allow all anti-virus and spyware programs to start ....

It's the AVG Antispy that appears to be the problem. All was fine until I loaded it yestersday. I only have 6 other items as "start up items". I may just uninstall the AVG Spy as I think of have plenty of protection here anyway. The 6 others are, AVG Anti virus, Win Defender, Comodo Firewall, Comodo BOClean, SpamFighter, & blsloader (my ISP Bell South). I've read the malware write up and follow it. Thanks for the reply.
