    Hi All,

I'm stumped - can anyone out there give me a bit of advice?

I have Norton AV on my PC but have never used the parental control feature. However, a couple of days ago a trojan got onto my PC - Norton flashed up that a virus had been found - it showed ctfmona.exe. and windkernal32.exe and then before I could do anything, my PC shut itself down and restarted itself - once booted up, a Norton AV window came up saying An Unknown Error has Occured with the number 1002,0 next to the OK button.

I clicked OK and then a progress meter came up saying my Norton parental control was loading. Once this had finished, I could use my PC almost as normal but I can now hardly access any website as the parental control has blocked them all - nearly all pages categorised as news, finance, most sports, etc have now all been blocked, which is a bit annoying!

I can't find any threads on tech forums where someone else has had anything similar happen....and Norton says only the administrator can change the parental control settings.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :) :)

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Likely there is still malware on your PC, which could be preventing changes to your settings in Norton, many malwares try and disable the antivirus, so to see whats going on and advise best course of action, please do follow thew below.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    Hi Rob,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your post. Are you sure that you are using Norton AntiVirus 2008 and not Norton Internet Security 2008? The Parental Control feature is a Free Add-On that must be downloaded separately, and is only available for Norton Internet Security 2008 and Norton 360.

The error message you received points to a problem with your installation of either Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security.

To resolve this issue you will need to use our "Norton Removal Tool" and then reinstall Norton using the original CD. Make note of your license number, as you will be prompted to re-enter it when you reinstall.

    Please follow these steps:

    1. Click on the link below to download and run the Norton Removal Tool. Please verify which Norton product you have installed and follow the instructions carefully.

    Norton Removal Tool and Instructions

    2. After the removal tool has completed, you will be prompted to restart your computer. After you restart your computer, please run the Norton Removal Tool one more time to make sure that it has completely removed everything.

    3. After your computer is restarted again, make certain that your internet connection is working properly, and then reinstall Norton. Towards the end of the installation the LiveUpdate feature will run and download and install both application and definition updates.

    4. The default setting for LiveUpdate in all Norton 2008 products is Automatic, however, since your computer may possibly be infected, please manually launch LiveUpdate by going to "Start,"->"All Programs,"->(your Norton product),->"LiveUpdate. LiveUpdate will then launch and check for any more updates that may be available.

    5. Finally, run a full system scan on your computer.

I hope that this process resolves your issue. Please reply back to this thread and let me know if this resolves your issue.

    Thank you,
    Mike
