    Hey guys,

I'm hopefully starting university this year and my dad is going to get me a notebook computer. Anyhow he's saying he'll probably put in $1500-2000 aus (we live in melbourne australia). I really want a notebook that is capable of playing some games such as oblivion and other graphically demanding games such as World in Conflict and Hellgate London. I'm willing to put in a few hundred $500+ to make sure i get something decent (even more if need be). I'll have to cary this thing around for the next 4 years so preferably under 5kg. What do you guys reckon?

You might check out http://www.powernotebooks.com/ The Sager laptops they used to sell were the same laptops that alienware sold without the brand name and flashy colors. I don't know if that is still the case since Dell bought them out or not, but the prices are still pretty reasonable.

You'd probably be interested in the Sager NP5791 or NP5792. ($1600 and $2100 respectively) The first one has an 8700M video card and the second has an 8800M GTX video card and both with a 17" screen. Those are about as good as they get right now without going SLI.

Also, to note... The base system doesn't include an OS, so make sure to chose one of them or be prepared to install it yourself.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the links i'm looking through them. We stopped by office works today and my dad liked the look of the acer aspire 5920G-302G20N. Intel core 2 duo T7300 2GHz, 2 Gb DDR2-667ram and a Nvidia Geforce 8600mGT 256mb graphics card. I think it was $1800. I wasn't terribly keen on it, I'll keep looking!

Try and get dedicated Graphics RAM, not shared Graphics RAM in whatever you choose. When you decide on a laptop, make sure you give that shopbot link a good workout. It will save you $$100's. Bazza

Ok guy's well my notebook arived today. Ended up getting a Dell Inspiron 1720. 2.4GHz centrino duo processor, 3GB of ram and a nvidia Geforce 8600M Graphics card with 256mb of dedicated ram. The computer also has 2 hard drives, both 160gb. One seems to be for the OS the other apparently just storage. not terribly sure how that works oh well. The comp came with windows vista ect as well. I've hooked it up to our wireless network, in fact i'm sitting in bed as I type this :) . All in all cost us $2300 australian. I'm very happy with it and tested its abilities by running the demo of hellgate london. Worked quite well especially when i turned a couple settings down from VH to H.

    Cheers
