    Hi,
I'm having the same exact problem as the person in the thread here, (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=146437). I don't know where its coming from or what started it but i don't want to delete the files because i don't know what they come from or what they're are for. by the way this message only pops up at the start of my computer

i also get another windows message saying something about windows update.exe cannot be found or something like that but i'm not sure i should discuss that in this thread

i have windows xp mce 2005 ive had trouble with the rollup update to 2005 for months and months so my computer still says i have 2002.
    service pack 2
    amd athlon 64x2dual
    core processor 3800
2.01 GHz 2.0 gb of ram

is there any additional info that is needed like a log file? ifso how do i go about that? o and i have Norton internet security i would follow the up on what it says in the other tread but i dont know if the same instructions apply to me.

    thanks in advance

i did as much as i could do from the instructions given.

it says under 1: House Cleaning & Setup

    * Empty ALL Quarantine type folders for antivirus and antispyware applications.

With instructions for Norton AV which i don't have but i have Norton internet security 2007 so i don't know if that would apply to me.

Another thing is that when i tried to get a report after the AVG Anti-Spyware scan there wasn't one.

The pop ups at computer start up are still there and i have a few other problems i didn't mention before because they might be part of a whole other situation and i dont know if i should start a new thread for them.

    1. I bought windows xp media center edition 2005 but i can never seem to get the rollup update to install.

    2. For a while i haven't been able to get into one of my external hard drives for some reason.

Please let me know if I should start a new tread for the other issues, if I do its no problem.

    Thanx

O, and somewhere during following the instructions my Norton Internet Security's phishing protection got turned off. is it ok if I turn it back on

These may be issues for the Software Forum. Wait until we are finished removing malware and then if they remain, post them there.

Wait until you finish with the below.

Is your copy of Spy Sweeper a paid version or free trial? If free, uninstall it now.
Do you have any idea what the below folders are for? If not, what is in these folders?
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\@dic\Local Settings\Application Data\"
    INSTAL~1 Nov 19 2007 "Installer2708"
    INSTAL~2 Nov 19 2007 "Installer2396"
    PBFFA1~1 Oct 14 2007 "pBFFa1njsrdqf"
Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "update.exe"

    O16 - DPF: {8B67B37E-1AE2-4B99-B8CF-55AF4D58DF0D} (IAMCE Class) - file://E:\win\setup\iamce.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot look for all of the above files we had Avenger attempt to delete. If you still see them, delete them yourself.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I didn't fill safe with it off so i turned it back on before you replied with your last post, sorry  but i turned it back off after reading your post:confused

Do you want me to list every single file in these folders? they seem to have something to do with Adobe

The only file that was still there is " C:\Documents and Settings\@dic\Local Settings\Temp\469F5DBD.TMP" and i deleted it manually.

Well the pop-ups at start up dont pop up anymore, super :D Thanks

Now off to the hard drive crisis :cry

    Even this one?
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\@dic\Local Settings\Application Data\"
    PBFFA1~1 Oct 14 2007 "pBFFa1njsrdqf"
Are there a lot of files in this folder? Name a few.

    Your logs are clean!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

If you're referring to the one you mentioned above its empty so can i delete it?
