Ya, 1 death/100K does seem high but they don't have OSHA there. Many died in mine collapses etc. They don't count deaths from pollution either I believe, would be kind of hard to categorize at times but then they don't like to publicly admit that they even have a pollution problem.

A billion people coupled with low safety regulations will do that,I saw a stat once about Indian students compared to the UK,there are so many in high paid jobs quite simply because they have more honor students than we have students:D

I believe that the 2008 Olympic Games will sheet home to the Government (they know but won't acknowledge), and the people, that they definitely have a pollution problem. It may even cause death/s if the athletes go under prepared for events like the Marathon run and long distance cycling. Bazza

You bring up a good point bigbazza, are they going to shut down all their coal fired plants? I don't think so, as much as I don't think the US would either! A cup acid rain anyone?cheers!rolleyes

It's China's Industrial Revolution! I'm pretty sure that there were deaths-a-plenty in England and the U.S.A before the era of trade unions. As soon as the Chinese people get a few spare coins in their pockets, or, if they develop trade unions, they will naturally become less inclined to die for wages, and that will eventually lead to improved working conditions. Until then, their overseers, will not be inclined to make their lives safer. Better working condirions lead to longer lives, which eventually leads to massive pension requirements. A billion Chinese pensioners in 50 years - yikes! :)
