WOW! Old laptop! ;) First thing, visit the Dell web site Support page here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen Select the middle choice and enter the Service Tag number printed on a small white sticker on the bottom of the laptop. This will direct you to system specs and upgrade info for that model of laptop including RAM type and max size, hard drive compatibility, etc. Remember, a laptop that slow will not run Windows XP satisfactorily unless you have no problems waiting.... for everything.... all the time... WinXP will run VERY slowly and if you add anything else to the OS with applications, antivirus software, etc... it will slow down even more. An older OS like Win98 or WinME will run OK.

The newer versions of windows (2000 and up) will support larger drives than the laptops bios will. I've sucessfully installed 20 gig drives with no problem. Memory tops out at 128 meg.
This setup runs windows 2000 nicely with no problems, it isnt a speed demon, but makes a nice practical laptop for word processing, email, MILD internet, and simple entertainment like cardgames and many of the (much) older games.

Ive done this on several dozen of them, and in fact, am setting one up for my ten yr old daughter, complete with wifi, as I am typing this.

I'm a retired systems engineer with a MASEE, from an IBM business partner, and Ive seen and done many strange setups, but I've really been impressed what the CP and CPI can do with that 233Mhz proc when setup like this.

Howdy Scott. Appreciate your reply. You The Man for sure on knowing what works and what want, looks like to me. Thanks for much needed advice. I am learning how to work on and repair Computers. I want to fix this one up for my 10 year old grandson. Someday I would like to take one of these older barebone laptops and replace everything in it and soop it up (as cheaply as possible) if it can possibly be done. Now that would be something speacial for me to accomplish. I have always been a tinker and tinkering with computers is one of my favorite things to do. If you have any advice on this, I will be glad to hear it. My help someone else who comes by and reads this. Apreciate ya very much. Thanks.......James
