    WHere should I start???

I figure that as long as you make time for those you love, then the rest is just icing on the cake...... Granted, the icing looks better with a high end vid card or on a big screen plasma TV, and it's easier to work on those holiday e-mails if you have a cool new notebook with a wi-fi network. but still... it's family that counts :)

They give you bigger presents usually :)

Happy Holidays, no matter what you celebrate this time of year :)

Well, the things that I really wish for, aren't going to happen, so they will remain just wishes, sadly. :(

That aside, like C.T. said, "I figure that as long as you make time for those you love, then the rest is just icing on the cake....". :) (True, dat).

    Hope y'all have a good one! ;)

I think you need a better outlook on yourself, anything is possible if you believe in yourself. You need to get out there and make things happen....take some chances... step out of your comfort zone....don't just dream but act on your dreams.

    Hello KittenBits,

Maybe volunteer your time with a worthwhile person. Check out the local volunteer network in your area or call a local nursing home and ask if there is a member with no family, go pick up a little tree an ornaments (dollar store) and decorate it with them, you will feel better and they will appreciate it. You can really learn a lot from those that have been there and done that.

p.s. everyone matters, you're unique - remember that.

    Hope your Holiday improves,

    Cat

@KittenBits . . . We all have worth, even though sometimes this is hard to see when we are going through a bad time or are just in the doldrums. Whenever I feel small and useless, it helps me to remember a bit of dialogue from a television series (Star Trek TOS) Where a character tells another not to beat up on himself, saying: "In this galaxy, there is a mathematical probability of three million earth-type planets. And in all the universe, three million-million galaxies like this one. And in all of that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us." I know it's very geeky - but I saw this first when I was quite young, and it really made me think . . . Yes, we are small - but each of us is unique, and the only one of us that will ever exist. Now by golly, that makes all of us matter. Merry Christmas, KittenBits, and all Major Geeks everywhere!

I'm almost ashamed to say that, massive geek that I am, that I have not ever owned a cell phone . . . . and I only recently had a pager thrust on me by my work. Heck - if I'm not at work, I'm home. I would just lose a cell phone - in fact, I'm not really sure where the pager is at this point . . . :confused

My only Christmas wish this year is for everyone to be healthy and happy!

This is my christmas wish I share with Mike. It always has been and always will be until such time as it can be put to rest.

    By MIKE CONNELL
    Times Herald

I wrote this poem in those grim and uncertain weeks after the 9/11 attacks, and if you’d indulge me, I’m reprinting it today as a holiday prayer of sorts.

    THE WORK OF ANGELS
When I was a little boy, Daddy would ask me:

“When you grow up, Squirt, what do you want to be?”

And I’d answer without hesitation or pause:

“When I’m old like you, I’m gonna be Santa Claus.”

Daddy would smile and say, “Gee, you might consider

“Becoming a doctor, plumber or pipefitter.

“You could be a preacher or a wealthy stockbroker.

“You could fly planes or play professional poker.”

I’d insist I meant to be Santa himself

With a beard, belly and the bright eyes of an elf.

And if it made my father laugh, I didn’t mind,

I wanted to grow up to be big-hearted and kind.

Well, the years passed and so did my ambition

To become the keeper of Santa’s tradition.

It wasn’t North Pole ice and wind that changed my mind,

Nor was it concern for the toy-making grind.

    What scared me wasn’t a fear of flying or heights;

No, what scared me were thoughts of horrific sights.

How awful, I thought, that Santa Claus must see

So much sorrow and pain; so much misery.

I could picture Santa clutching tight to his reins

As he flew above battlefields and blood-soaked plains.

I wondered if sometimes his reindeer dared not land

Because of marching soldiers with rifles in hand.

In mind’s eye, I saw him near a burning forest

With the roar of the flames a demonic chorus.

I saw him steer his sled past a lifeless wasteland

And wondered who might have done this, demon or man?

I could see Santa wipe away tears of pity

As he flew amid the ruins of a torched city

Where rubble marked the tombs of the weak and blameless,

Where ashes alone recalled the lost and nameless.

Finally, I saw him emerge from a chimney

And enter a bleak room without tinsel or tree.

He felt a child’s presence, yet no child did he spy,

Till he saw a starving baby too weak to cry.

    In my vision, I saw Santa fall to his knees;

I saw him clasp his hands as he prayed: “Please, oh please,

“Can’t we end the suffering, the killing, the war?

“Can’t we feed the hungry, can’t we clothe the poor?”

I could never be Santa for I lack the brawn

To see the world as it is and to keep going on.

On Christmas Eve, I’ll put out a tray of treats

And tuck a letter in with the milk and the sweets:

“Dear Santa, I believe I know your mind.

“You’re all I hoped to be, big-hearted and kind.

“Go forth tonight with gifts of peace and compassion,

“Your message of goodwill never falls out of fashion.

“As you travel the planet, may love mark your trail,

“May mercy light your path, may God guard you well.

“May people everywhere understand your life’s call:

“You do the work of angels, the hardest job of all.”

I also ask for forgiveness for being myself at times not called for and a long less painfull life.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all

Given all the responses in this thread, your Christmas wish came true - you actually do matter;)

And, like Cat_w_9_lives suggested earlier, check out community volunteer work - even with a Charity...St Vincent De Paul's is a great one any time of year...they love helpers and it can actually be a load of fun helping out and networking with other volunteers:)

can;t believe I missed this when it was current.........
Each and every one of you matter to me - friendly, prickly, happy or sad - all of you.
Believe it or not, believe in it or not, you are, indeed, all in my prayers every day.
I'm not a normally gregarious person in this world - this right here is as close as I have to belonging to a community - thank you all for having me and being kind and patient when I am dense.
I got what I needed for Christmas = a place to belong.

    Blessings,
    Port-O-San

Thanks for the thoughts! Monday I can re-file for unemployment. Which means hopefully by some time in February or March my checking account will no longer be almost a grand overdrawn. I guess that counts as "something good".

  36. legalsuit

Given the taxes paid, those type of payments (though not much) will at least tide you over while you search...there is something better out there for you...it will happen:)

  37. Sgt. Tibbs

It's not so much the search as it is the economy picking back up so I can do my job again. Unfortunately, in a state that (according to Mitt Romney) is in a "one-state recession" with the highest unemployment rate in the country, people just aren't interested in going to see shows. Which means I don't get any work.

Meh...no sense dwelling on it. It's not like I can do anything different or get another job (just had that discussion with my mother this afternoon, in fact).

  38. legalsuit

    legalsuit Legal Eagle

Don't know your line of work...nor will I pry...but understand your frustration because I've been there, done that, worn the T-Shirt as they say given I was "thrown into the deep" at an early age.

But I will differ with you on one point if I read you right when you stated: "...It's not like I can do anything different or get another job..." I'll bet you're a talented person with more to offer than you're giving yourself credit for...sometimes one needs to go outside their "normal" areas/boundaries for work either as a temporary measure given the State's current economy and/or utilising what skills/knowledge one actually has, but simply doesn't acknowledge or use.

    eg
In the past, I took on lower skilled jobs just to "bring home the bacon", and opportunities opened up from such jobs that moved me into properly aligned skilled positions within the same company when jobs became available, (I was first choice, knew company's culture/procedures plus had skills needed).

I wish you every success in any endeavour you undertake, regardless how bad your State's current economy/employment status may be.:)

  39. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

I'm a stagehand. The only way to make money at is it to be available 24/7/365, and it's damn good money when there are shows to do. The only other jobs available around here that I'm qualified to do (yes, I have skills, there just aren't any jobs that don't have upwards of 50 applicants per position...I tried) are minimum wage, maximum 15-20 hours a week, third shift (read: convenience store clerk). If I took one I wouldn't be available to do my real job, and I would lose even more money.

I refiled unemployment yesterday, so I'll start getting checks in two weeks again. Spent all morning today on the phone making payment arrangements for stuff, so hopefully I'll be able to keep my car another couple of months until either work picks up or unemployment catches me up again.

Thanks again for being so kind!
