Also, if I hear Apple tote Remote Disc as some awesome godsend again, I am going to scream. We have been able to do this in Windows in the form of mapped drives since...for a very long time. Just map the cd rom drive!

I've even burned CDs that way.

What do you expect from Apple?

    Innovation.

    What do you expect?

Maybe the second revision will address these concerns.

I expect a bunch of hot air about revolutionary changes in every little thing they do.

iPhone is still just a phone. MacBook is still just a laptop.

The Bugatti Veyron is just a car too.

Apple does what every company does.

    Uses marketting buzzwords.

I don't hold it against them though ;)

The difference is that the Bugatti does have some revolutionary features though. The MacBook Air doesn't other than it's thin features.

Ambient light sensors, LED technology in the screen. The light sensors are incredibly useful, and you never see a use for them till you dont have em.

So there is innovation, and the iPhone is no exception.

The problem here is the oversight of obvious things (like changeable batteries).

I don't think the thing even has an optical drive in it either. I couldn't see it in the specs or in the 3d views of the machine.

    It doesnt. No UMPC does.

Usually. There is a video that goes into decent depth about it. The lack of optical drive is related to my remote disc rant.

Hehe, if that's an oversight then I'll eat an iPhone! That has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Ya right, send my unit to some faceless warehouse with a group of elves replacing the battery, and then there's a glitch in the system and someone e-mails you to your desktop machine that they lost it. Will AT&T not charge you for your downtime, what will you use to replace the iPhone while the battery is being replaced! Pay for a backup cellphone? It was an asinine decision IMO.

I'll bet here will be a spare power source but it will be external and connect to the power charging point, the external power source 'upgrade' will be white with and apple on it and cost three times as much as a regular battery:D

When I was referring to changeable batteries, I was referring to the MacBook Air.

    It doesnt have them either.

Knowing that the average lifespan of a laptop battery is not much more than a year, and knowing that is just right at the end or past, the warranty...Yep, better account for that (big)automatic cost yearly or so.

The site referenced is windows site. They are not going to say good things about Apple. Also, people complained about not having floppy drives in the first iMacs. I just think that we are in a wireless world and if you need an optical drive, there is one for $100.

He reviews Mac stuff as well, as well as Linux. He is also very critical of MS products, as much as he prasies them.

Doesn't matter the source, if what he says its true.

Right? If Apple pitches it to me and says there is no changeable battery, do you think that makes me any happier, being that it came from an Apple-friendly site?

Consider the price, then consider the (serious) drawbacks. The optical drive is not a serious drawback, imo.

Of course, when you pay 1800 for a machine, then another 100 for an optical drive...

Its even worse if you get the top of the line version.

Of course, Apple announces Remote Disc. I announce mapping of optical drives, possible since (at least) windows 98.

Which, voids the warranty and doesnt address what the whole issue is:

People who need extended life on batteries, who keep more than one around.

Im one of the people. I keep a 6 and 12 cell battery at hand at all times.

It is good to know that is is easy to DIY, though.

This laptop is 0.16-0.76 inch (0.4-1.94 cm) in height, I am just guessing that it may make the laptop thicker if the battery is user installable one. It's hard to tell without you seeing the guts of it.
I guess I would reserve my judgement until I see it in real life.

Im not making any judgement calls aside from this major oversight. From the sounds of it, they could have made the battery easily user replaceable, but opted not to.

If you have dealt with Apple warranties (I have), you will know that any action on the end user to attempt to service an officially non-serviceable part ends up with a voiding of your warranty.

Just to be fair, here is a pro Apple site reporting pretty much the same thing.

Adrynalyne, I wasn't talking about you making the judgment call, I was talking about my self reserving the judgement. I agree there are some questions about the product but just like a lot of products, like the iMac when it came out. People were ticked off about not having a floppy.
    regarding the battery, he said:

    and

the computer will be out of warranty by that time.

It doesnt address people who need extended battery life!

    ;)

I agree with you form what I see in this laptop now, there is a lot of features missing. But I guess that would the price people pay for having and ultra portable computer, something have to give. If you need extended battery life, then there is the macbook or macbook pro choices. For me, I am still a fan of the Powerbook 12 inch one. :)
