About 4 days ago, when I went to uninstall a program, I noticed that there were some programs in my control panel that I didn't install and I can't remove. My computer doesn't seem to be running any slower but I have a core 2 duo so I don't know if I would notice even if I did have a major virus. I have three hard drives on this computer and the first thing I did was back up all of my files in my documents, all of my music and other important documents, etc... My first instinct was to reformat my main hard drive that runs my OS. Initially, I did a quick format and the second time I did the full format that takes longer but neither worked. After doing the basic updates of windows and installing just the basic programs that I have for years without any problems, the virus or whatever it is keeps coming back. I already tried doing all of the basic steps that you guys suggested but that didn't work either. I am really hoping that I can fix this without having to wipe all of my hard drives and loosing everything. Thanks in advance for the help.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to be more specific. What exactly are you referring too? Gives names or show a snapshot of the icons you are referring too. What opens up if you double click these icons? Perhaps you just don't recognize something you have installed. Your logs do not show any signs of malware.

You already said you did a quick format and then a full format some I'm not sure what you are thinking.

Hey there, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I attached the print screen of my add or remove window. In the picture I marked the suspicious files red dashes. There are some other ones further down the list but I figured that one picture was enough to explain my situation. When I double click the strange programs, nothing happens and there isn't an option to uninstall them. I know the programs on my PC quite well and I know that these shouldn't be there.

About the formating situation, I described that I had 3 hard drives, I backed up my important data and formated my main hard drive not the other two. The other two were used to back the data up. I used my windows xp cd to fully format and reinstall windows. After initial installation, the malware didn't show up but after a few hours or a day, it would come back even if I wouldn't install anything new.

I'm not sure how I'm not being clear about the formating. If you use a Windows cd to do a clean install, there are two different ways of formating the drive. I did the quick option first and then the regular format the second time that rewrote each character in the hard drive. If you have any questions, please let me know.

They are all valid and part of software you have from Dell. Some for your Printer.

I could be wrong about them being from Dell. The names looked similar to one of their printer names. However they still look valid. Also you said in control panel. This is not control panel. This is Add/Remove Programs.

Yeah, sorry about the Contol Panel thing, I meant Add or Remove Programs. Some of them are for the printer, but things like the AIO_Scan, I read are suspected to be malware. And I don't have a Dell computer. I built this PC myself and I am using a copy of XP that I got myself. I did just get a new printer but I am positive that my new HP printer didn't install 15 different strangely named things on my PC. I did check some of the names that came up and some of them seem legit but the things that those files are associated with aren't on my PC. I don't want to say that I'm an expert but I know enough to tell that these programs shouldn't be on my PC.

No! It is not malware it is HP Printer/scanner drivers. See: http://www.bulgar-bg.com/Downloads/drivers/11%20-%20Printers%20&%20Scanners/HP%20Full%20Drivers%20WinXP/Setup/AiO_Scan/

Most of this stuff may not even be installed. It may have just been improperly uninstalled from your computer and did not remove itself completely from the registry. Based on of the logs in MGlogs.zip (the GetUnKey.txt log) those items you highlighted are not really installed.

You could search for them in your registry using the below and see what comes up. I'll give one example of how to search.

Download Registry Search (see the link titled RegSearch Download Link)

    * Extract the files from Regsearch.zip into a folder.
    * Doubleclick regsearch.exe to start the program.
    * Enter AIO_Scan in the top area of the form and then click "OK".
    * Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file named RegSearch.txt will be saved in the program's folder as well). Attach this file to your next reply.

Damn, that's a lot of goofy stuff for a printer to install. Thanks for the info.

HP is notorious for installing an ungodly amount of garbage for their printers/scanners.
