Can someone check the log files please?

    I'm trying to help my parents clean their machine (XP Pro, Version 2002, SP 2). I would really appreciate feedback on the log files after the scans. The machine is still running rather sluggishly - programs load slowly.

    One note, after running the AVG anti-spy, many tracking cookies were found and I clicked "Apply All Actions". When I click on the REPORT tab, I got a message that said, "No reports available". Not sure why...I had it set to generate a report after every scan. So I ran the scan again. The 2nd time, it found nothing, and (of course) generated a report for the 2nd scan. I've attached it.

    You don't really have any malware problems; however I will give you some things to do which may help you performance issues and some are just necessary steps anyway.


    Are you running ZoneAlarm with antivirus??


    Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    Now reboot

    After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

    NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created.


    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Yes, this computer is running Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. I'm sure that's part of the resource hogging, but it's much slower now than it was when ZA was first installed. Since it looks like I deleted ZA from the startup, the pc is now without av protection, right? What would you recommend for av and firewall?

    I don't know that the system booted up much quicker this time. From the input of the user password until everything was loaded and mozilla would open was about 4-5 minutes.

    Any other recommendations? I have attached the mglogs.zip. Thanks again for your help!

    I just wanted to see the effect. You can add the Zlclient line back in by running analyse.exe and going to Misc Tools/Backups and find that item, select it, and restore it.

    Things we recommend (and we never recommend any security suites) are in the link in my final instructions below. You can also uninstall AVG Antispyware now since we are finished with it.


    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
