Any clue what causes this?

I have, since around November of last year, had a problem with Internet Explorer (see attached). At first I thought it was due to something with the connection, however, Outlook Express works... I can go to the same URL with the same connection with Firefox. What could be wrong? Any things I can check?

Can you think of anything that you installed around that time? Like Peerguardian or anything that might block sites deemed hazardous from a list it watches (spybot search and destroy has a block list but I doubt google is on it unless one of your buddies put it there as a joke). If you had a jokster friend at the house around that time what a great prank huh? Put a commonly used site on the block list.

I installed the update of Total Access from Earthlink... everything went to hell after that... I went through a MalWare exercise and cleansed the machine, but still have this problem... I was amazed at how much stuff gets put on your system to use their silly little GUI my wife liked. I now have no Earthlink software on my machine and dial up directly. As part of the cleanse, I installed SpyBot... I'll have to check all blocked lists. It does it on the desktop, or when I connect my laptop via a LAN connection. The laptop is new with Vista and whatever the latest IE is; stock install. The desktop is older with XP SP2...

Does IE work for any sites. Could you somehow have checked Work Offline under the file menu in IE?

No. It gives the same message for any URL. I thought so, but that's not the case.

Repair IE (hat I'm suggesting is for IE 6; if you have IE 7, look at some of the other methods a the same link)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
scroll down to method 3 try that and see it it fixes IE.
    If not, try method 4.

    Damn it man!

Well, I am a DA... I checked Internet Options > Connections > Settings again... Automatically detect settings was checked... but use Proxy was also set... so... yeah someone was messing with the settings and I just overlooked it. Doah!

Thanx for all the help! In the immortal words of Emily Latella, "Never mind".
