XP Starts about 1 out 7 trys...

Hello,
I am having a problem starting XP pro on a PC. It starts properly about 1 in 7 trys. It usually gets to the black background screen with the windows logo and a green progress bar. (What is this screen called) Sometimes it goes past this to a solid black screen.
I can always get it to start in Safe mode and Last Known configuration does not work any better than Start Normally.
Recent hardware changes are an hp w22 monitor and a keyboard but these seem to work fine and there are no problems with devices in system menu.

To make matters worse, it is also crashing for no apparent reason!!

Thanks for this info but I don't see how I can use it just now since I don't have any error codes that would point me to a particular filename if I understand correctly...
I tried to get to recovery console but the BIOS does not seemed to be configured to boot from the CD. I've tried a bunch of F keys and can't get at the bios to change this...

 

Try f2, or, the del button, but you must do so Immediately the system starts up, or, it will skip to Windows.Once set to boot from CD, WATCH AS IT STARTS FOR THE PROMPT TO BOOT FROM CD - AGAIN, IF YOU MISS THE PROMPT, IT MIGHT BOOT STRAIGHT TO WINDOWS.

 

If you can get into Windows in safe mode, then these links will save a lot of explanation.
But, if you can get into Windows, safe mode, then you can
Click start, Run,
Type in sfc /scannow, put your XP disc in the cd rom, and Windows protected files will be replaced, but you need to watch and, sometimes click retry several times until the progress bar finishes. this often cures Windows problems.
Otherwise, in the run box, type in CHKDSK /F, AND CLICK O.K.Shut down, and restart, and the system will check and fix many problems.

One more thing...I don't know if this is somehow related to my original problem or not...but now that the machine seems to be rebooting without error...I see that the DVD drive does not work. I tried updating the driver but I'm not sure it worked. It says that the device is working properly but its just NOT. My Dvd software says that there is no disk in the drive.

That may have been your problem, all along. How many CD/DVD writing programs have you got?

When you post it is a really good idea to give as much information about your system as practicable, both hardware and software, including Operating System service packs.

I just installed a second DVD program when I discovered that the DVD was not working. Fist is Nero second is LG cyberlink multimedia. This report was generated with Everest and the PC is not connected to the new HP monitor that I suspected may have also been part of the problem...

I thought the LG multiformat DVD drives that came with Cyberlink came with B's recorder and B's clip.


Which version of Nero do you have and did it come with the LG?

What exactly is not working about the DVD?

 

The disc I used for the Nero is Nero Burning ROM 6.3.1.6 SE
The DVD does not launch any DVD's nor can I burn any DVD's...
The second disk that I installed also has Ahead software with Nero Express (I find easier to use...)

 

Might be best to uninstall, use the cleanup tool, then reinstal , as you might have conflicting files,

Firstly you can't have more than one recording program on your system as they conflict.

It is usually best to use the one which came with the drive, which came with the LG?
Version 6 of Nero is known to be stable. There are no reports of problems. many users have had trouble like yours or worse with version 7 however.

Other recording programs such as Itunes added later can also cause problems.
