    Hi everybody,

First of all, Thanks for the 'Read and Run me First' post. My computer was badly infected as I didnot have any antivirus or anti spyware for some time. I never knew about the infection till yesterday when I an helpful looking green icon on the desktop -'Help and Support'. Then there was a pop up saying my compter was running slower than it should, and once I clicked 'ok', it took me to a website and started downloading a file. Thats when I noticed that the name of the website was kinda suspicious. It was 'storageprotection.com'. It was then I started my research and found out everything that I should have known earlier. I know I really feel stupid.

    Starting the Cleanup process...
After doing a little reseach I bought Spy Sweeper. I ran it and it deleted a few malwares. But I also had the trial version of XoftSpy. After running that I found that there were a bunch of other malwares that still felt invited in my computer. It was only then I fisrt heard of HijackThis and I found this forum. I religiously followed all the steps in the post 'Read and Run First'. That fixed most of my problems. But after doing everything till late last night I woke up today and ran XoftSpy again. Now there was only one entry 'Backdoor IRCbot AJR trojan' residing in c:\windows\system32\mdm.exe. For some reason I ran combofix again but this time it did not find anything. Please forgive me, but I guess the first report by combo fix was overwritten by the second run. The I ran AVG again only for the 'Windows' folder, but it did not find anything. Then I ran SpySweeper only for the windows folder and it found a Backdoor Trojan and it removed. I thought it was done but now after running the Xoftspy again I see that it is still there.

Please have a look at the logs and tell me a way to get rid of this. Please remember that the combofix log is from the second run and not the first. The first time it had a long list of POS... files that it had deleted from the C drive. Do you think running the Spysweeper in safe mode will help?

    Laptop details:
    Windows XP SP2
AV: I now have MCafee on-access scan running realtime
    Anti-spyware: SpySweeper running real time.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Uninstall XoftSpy now for two reasons. One it is a trial and cannot fix anything. Two it is well know for false positives. mdm.exe (Machine Debug Manager) is a Microsoft program. See the below link for info on it and how to turn it off if you don't need it.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321410

Since you now have a paid version of Spy Sweeper installed, uninstall the trial version of AVG Antispyware that you installed while running the READ ME.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    Mozilla Firefox (1.5)

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: BHOManager Class - {474264BC-9571-47C1-85B9-780F756DC9CE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\BHOManager.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {49D63E18-33B1-46F2-82C2-39431FB94794} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xxywutr.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O18 - Protocol: HTLFP - {03B7A5D4-96B0-4316-95F8-072D326A58F1} - ielpview.dll (file missing)
    O18 - Protocol: vfsp - {E4CB5121-E242-11D4-8ED6-00010219EB22} - VFSProtocol.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: xxywutr - xxywutr.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
    C:\Documents and Settings\Abhijit Sadhu\Local Settings\Temp\

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks a lot Chaslang!! My laptop appears to be much faster now. I followed the steps given by you and attached are the log files. I had a couple of questions though. I ran the Spy Sweeper in safe mode, before I got your reply. It found 13 spy cookies and deleted them. So is it normal to get spy cookies or am I getting them because my computer is still infected??

Also, I downloaded COMODO firewall. But for some reason IE will not startup if I keep it in Defense+ mode. So I disabled the defense+ and now IE is working. Do I really need defense+ ??

Please have a look at the logs and let me know if every thing is alright.

    Thanks Again,
    Avi.

Cookies are not problems. Ignore the false indications from antispyware tools. They are just a method for increasing their supposed detection counts. You will see more info on this in the link in my final instructions.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean that IE will not actually even run? Or do you mean that you cannot connect to any websites?

Note: I'm not sure it is a good idea to even use the Defende mode feature of Comodo if you have Spy Sweeper installed. This could lead to conflicts. You may want to consider using a different free firewall. There will be others list in my final steps below.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
