Positive thoughts needed...

I've been away from the forums for several days, therefore I missed the chance to add my positive thoughts to the others here.

I'm glad things are looking up for Ra. People who do not have pets cannot understand how attached we get to them. They are like perpetual children, and we treat them as members of the family.

That's because they are members of the family...

A cat will love you unconditionally, without reserve, fear, or even manipulation. Is there any wonder that we cry when they leave us?

Hi Natakel - Thanks for your post.

It's true about our furry companions, they do become part of the family. My Amon-Ra still is struggling to rid himself of the dreadful toxins from that paralysis tick...he's had a bit of a set back since last night. The vet will be checking up on him if he doesn't pick up by Thursday. Amon has been lucky so far, but it's a long process to full recovery.:)

    Once again, Thanks!

    Cheers

    Update on Amon-Ra:

Well my Amon-Ra has been confined to the house since bringing him home last weekend. I have been concerned because he barely eats a tablespoon of food per day, and not toileting! So yesterday I contacted our vet, who advised he would come to the house to check him.

Later that morning, as I opened the front door to put some rubbish in our recycle bins outside by the side of the house, Amon slipped between my legs. As I am still slow at moving and presently can't stoop down, nor pick him up, his slow walking gait was faster than what I was capable of movement...so he slipped away with no anti-tick protection.

Feeling distressed when the vet arrives and there is no Amon-Ra to be seen, vet gives me tablets for Ra, with further instruction to keep him confined and report back in the next few days.

No amount of calling nor searching saw any sight of Ra.

Twelve hours later, Amon-Ra announces his arrival, flops down and lays stretched out beside me, with a raised paw ready for grooming himself, he gives me an ever so casual look of, "S'what's up Momma?!".

I'm starting to think this cat is getting better...because he certainly is causing me aggravation again!!:mad...but I was so relieved and happy to see him home again <sigh!>...and he certainly wasn't so happy as I inspected him "inside out, upside down" for any ticks!LOL

Yes...slow though he still might be, that little rascal knows he is still faster than my current speed...just wait 'til I get up to speed again...I'll learn 'im.:p

Great news that Ra is feeling better and on the mend. Even though that means he's well enough to do the 'disappearing' act on you, and make you go into nervous overdrive. Take care, all. :)

Thank you comperroruter, very sweet and thoughtful of you.

It's a slow process recovering from that awful paralysis tick poisoning for my Amon-Ra...although he still is eating little, he is slowly getting better.

After his little escapee last Thursday, I've again confined him for proper observation and safety during his recuperation.

    Cheers

Sorry I couldn’t lend some support earlier. But life just gets in the way sometimes. It’s unbelievable how our pets turn into our best friend after all the years spent together. My father-in-law dog passed away 2 years ago and he’s a tuff old kind of guy & nothing seems to bother him. But the truth be told is that my mom told me that he was miserable for weeks. Animals help so much especially when life deals you a lousy hand. You have a lousy day & sure enough they are always therefore you with a wagging tail, snuggle accompanied with a purr. Well in my case bob (my cat) is so big I have to go to him. I’m truly glad everything is working out for you & your furry 4 legged member. Here’s to a speedy recovery. :)

Thanks for your post Bear...I purposely hadn't responded because I've been observing a decline of my Amon-Ra... since my last post.

The vet will be taking him back to the clinic today for further testing, treatment and observation. Amon appears to have had a relapse as a consequence of that horrid paralysis tick.

I'm thinking he'll be okay...it's just a bit of a process and the problem had initially been caught in its last stages.

Sorry to hear Ra is not having a speedy recovery, when my cat is off her food I give her baby food. Gerber here (US) makes a all meat one (Chicken, Turkey, Beef or Veal) I mix the Beef jar with overcooked rice (mushy) 2x beef to 1x rice and feed her that for a few days until her appetite picks up, usually works when she is on the mend, she perks up. With my cat the beef is easier to keep down...but others have said turkey is better for their cats.

My vet says it's okay for a two week period to get them eating again....but you should check with your vet also. Will say a prayer for Ra.

So sorry that Amon-Ra has taken a downturn. As you said before, it does take time to recover prom Tick Paralysis, and often there are relapses.

More positive thoughts being sent your way to Amaon-Ra and to yourself. :)

Thanks Phantom, Mankind, LauraR, Mimsy, darlene, gal1998 for your kind support. And Cat_w_9_lives, I'll try that, but presently, no matter what favourite foods presented, he turns away and refuses to eat. Over a 5 day period he only ate the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of food, wouldn't touch liquids (no water and refused his favourite cat's milk), and only urinated once. But at least he can walk.

He is now home and again confined to the house. Very lethargic, sleeps a lot, lost his meow and on medication. Vet will check in on him this Thursday. So I'll just keep him quiet until then.

    Thanks again one and all:wave

Yes, it has been. But now I'm moving into "robotic mode" and simply do what's required, plus our vet has been excellent. The way Ra looks at me and stays close is his assurance that he trusts me and knows I'm doing my best for him...so that wonderful faith helps me a lot. :)

  24. Cat_w_9_lives

Maybe just try Ra's favorite meat (in type of baby-food you select - its like a loose paste texture) on your finger and hand feeding, if that does not work try mixed with water -might drink some, the rice is just for their stool and digestion. Another thing to try is to put a little on the side of his mouth (on fur), will lick off a few times, then decide to eat some hopefully, but be careful if they think you are forcing them, will get angry and refuse.

Vet has also recommended plain yogurt in past but usually does not work with my cat. My heart goes out to you LS I know that helpless feeling when your companion is ill and you can't make it better. All you can do is have hope and keep Ra comfortable, he knows you love him.

Sending some positive thoughts your way. I am in a simular boat with my 13 year old mutt. Funny, thinking about geriatric care for a pet. But we do what we can.

Best of wishes to you and your friend.

Thanks Eric, from memory, your dog's name is Fred, and that you had a worrying time with him also a while back. It does take a different route with a geriatric pet.

Yeah, I keep forgetting Amon is in his 16th year because prior to tick paralysis, he was a strong, muscular, healthy and youthful cat that jumped 1.8m (6foot) fences, climbed trees and controlled his territory. Now his weight has halved and he sleeps a lot.

I tend to be as tenacious as a "pit bull terrier" when I focus on something, which I am now on Amon, so I'll persist and have to be patient until he comes good.

    Thanks Eric:wave

Thanks so much for your recommendations/advice Cat. I have tried different foods as you suggested and have also been trying to hand feed him since the first time he returned home from the vet, but to no avail.

He loves yoghurt with a little sugar as well as ice cream, but even these he refuses to have even if dabbed onto his lips, or paws or offered on my finger. Normally he'll go through half a cup of the stuff, now he turns his head away. I just wish he would at least have liquids, even plain water to help wash the toxins out of his body. (He even rejects water I try to gently push down inside his mouth using an eye drop.)

I think it's probably a matter of letting Nature take its course for the toxins to leave his body. The tick was caught in its late stages, plus given his age probably makes the process longer...I suspect also he is probably refusing to eat because he is still feeling nauseous and the effects of the toxins and medication.

I'm sure he'll eventually come good. I'll continue being persistent.:)

    Thanks again.:wave

Bob our 23 pounder puddy tat was having problems about 6 years ago. He lost about 10 lbs in a very short time. We took him in for an operation. They inserted a tube into his stomach with the end taped to the back of his neck. They gave us a large syringe to inject food & then a shot of water to help push the food into his stomach. We had to do that twice a day until he put some weight back on. Oh he loved wearing that plastic cone on his head. It took a few weeks but he been doing very well since.

Thanks Phantom, and everyone else who has been so kind with their good thoughts.

Amon-Ra is still slowly getting better...food intake now up to three table spoons per day, and he is starting to look a little brighter but still lethargic. Still not up to his normal daily food intake, but better than what it has been. So I'm feeling a lot more confident with his progress now, than what I have been these past three weeks.:)

Thanks Darlene and Bill. And yes, he is a good vet who takes a personal interest with his patients. When he came to our house to put down two other animals at two separate times in the past, he had grown to love them also and had tears in his eyes. So I'm grateful to have found a vet like him.:)

    Hiya! Thanks for asking.

Self - seeing neurosurgeon and physiotherapist tomorrow and GP Friday...so hoping I can start physio asap...only a week since I drove (1st time since last November), and went crazy with new found freedom, so I took in couple of meetings and gone all day - paid for that with a 2 day lay up...too much too soon:eek::( Not a good patient...too impatient:D

As for Amon-Ra...still very slow progress and allowed him outside freedom a week ago as well...our vet still drops in weekly to check him out, because still not eating/toileting normally yet. That poison really knocked him about, but I'm still confident that he'll eventually come good.:)

And how are you going?! Nice and strong and enjoying all that unhindered breathing? Completed all of your recup stuff?
