First off, *thanks* to all the people on these boards who help little people like me. I've learned a heck of a lot here! I've read and run through the "read me first's" as best I can.

This whole thing started up a few days ago. All of the sudden I got the error, "NT_kernel error 1256 K_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLEY."

I went through the steps, with all the programs, and STILL I get these stupid IE popups..which I never use anyway. I always use firefox. The other difficult issue is that this is my work computer, which is running a password protected version of trend micro office scan. I'm hoping to get rid of this thing without alerting our IT guy, who's plate is way too full as it is.

I'll attach some logs that I have. I also ran Combofix and VundoFix. Thank you so much for any help you may have!

    Hi basstom!
    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I need the Combofix log. The hijackthis log should already be one of the ones in the zip file you posted. I think the Combofix log is under C, but check the READ & RUN ME for its location if you have trouble finding it.

    Thanks.

I forgot to add, that I think that the popups have something to do with mozilla. My computer's been asleep since 6:30pm yesterday (PST) and I just got in and didn't see any IE popups. Then, I started to check my mail on mozilla and do a few things, and suddenly...popups.

    Hi basstom1,
Here are some instructions for you:

    1) To begin with, please disable your guest account if that's not already disabled.

    2) Go to start> control panel> administrative tools> services> scroll down to " Microsoft cache control" may be named "(MSControlService) " and double click it. Click the blue drop down arrow to the far right of "startup type"> click disable> apply> ok. Exit administrative tools.

    3)
Next, go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following:

    WeatherBug Download Manager

    4) Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {373C48D5-85D4-40BF-AEC7-0F7873D914F4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstt.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [000000ae] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\nxkyvnbx.dll",b

O23 - Service: Microsoft cache control (MSControlService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\windows (file missing)

After you click fix, just close hijackthis.

    5) Download and install Erunt. Use it to create a backup of your registry.

    6) Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    7) Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    8) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    9) Please run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat and attach the fresh MGlogs.zip it generates along with the Avenger log. Also, please tell me if you get a success message for the REGEDIT4 when you run it.

Let me know how things are running now?

    Abri,

I started going through everything like you asked..including disabling Microsoft Cache Control.

    When I run MGTools/Analyse.exe, I don't see the "023 Service: Microsoft..."

Should I just fix everything else (after closing all browser apps) except the 023 line?

Thanks again so much for you help!
    Tom

Abri! You are some genius my friend!!

Everything seems to be running great! I'm (obviously) running Firefox and no popups are coming up in IE!! Speed, performance..everything seems to be working great. I can't thank you enough! Let me know if you're ever in LA and sushi's on me! :)

Also, the regedit4 / fixME.reg worked great and got a successful mesasge. Here are the logs you requested.

Thanks so much again for all your prompt help!!

    sushi ....
yes, I'll take you up on that if I'm out that way lol

It looks like your logs are clean. Please do the final cleanup instructions which include wiping all your previous restore points and setting a clean one. Also, please read through the How to protect yourself from malware at the end and in particular, note the recommendation on Spyware Blaster.
