    Hi,

I've been using Pidgin for instant messaging, and recently starting getting a message each time I open it.

Please let me know what this might be, and what I can do about it.

AIM: Hey! Good news! Somebody says they are your buddy and wants you to show up on their AIM profile. Click here to see the one request (s) you have waiting.

I'm not being funny, but have you tried clicking it?

AIM is AOL Instant Messenger. It could be someone you know - or just spam/whatever, but you should get the chance to accept/reject/block after seeing who it is

I can't get rid of this thing.

Do you need the AIM part of it ?

If not, uninstall the version you have, get the latest version and untick the AIM support when re-installing.

Did you even try clicking it, to see who it was ?

    I do need the AIM.

I went to the link. It's just spam.

I use Pidgin for a long time .and I have even account on AIM..but I get none of this...Pidgin has a lot of plug-ins (they keep coming out like mozilla add ons) Disable all of the Plug ins.!!!!!!!! .Plus cancel all buddy pounces.!!!!!..All of them...And then write again of that spam...I do use Pidgin because there is no Big Brother. And I have peaceful chatting...BTW who is your carrier ? Do you try to sneak around with proxys ? the conflict of interest..could create..funny messages...The World of Sucks...I am 100% sure you won't have anymore messages...if you are using catcher on regular AIM ...disable that as well...as usually is, I am not guilty

Hello to All...Because I do love privacy and peace of mind. I putted away, most of the commercial (Internet) toys, that some people cannot live without. The simplicity of Pidgin overtook me completely..Peace of Mind..After I wrote the previous post .It was bugging me that a fellow member encountered a problem, that violate the principle of privacy..I do have AIM Pro but I never use it..Also I remember years ago (5 or 8)..When I was using AOL AIM quite often. And remember.the avalanche of spam on the AIM...At that time the only way to get rid of those, was reporting and blocking those involved in pranks or search for a quick buck..If this is the case with You now..You should log in, using the "official" AIM and reported and if source is known blocked...But please don't blame the Pidgin.(Ever heard these words ? don't kill the messenger).Pidgin is only forwarding what it found in your account...I did mention the plugg-ins..because of past experiennces which happen to my friends.using Pidgin..some of them (that was a year ago) were getting same messages each time the Pidgin Logged in to services. Like the infinite loop(back)...I do hope, that all will positively resolve itself...

You do know that even though you are using Pidgin for MSN chat information still uses the MSN protocol and travels through the same servers as it would using Windows Live Messenger- right?

    P.s. drive a minivan off a cliff.

P.S. No matter how much you disagree with another poster, talk like that will get you in a heap of trouble here.

Please refrain from inflammatory comments. Thanks.

I continually get this message too. I use AIM. It is not someone I know. (AIM: Hey! Good news! Somebody says they are your buddy and wants you to show up on their AIM Profile.) I have clicked on it. It is spam. It takes you to a Bebo site and tells you to enter your user name and password. I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of it - including blocking, and nothing works. It pops up every time I open AIM.

alcatab, welcome to MajorGeeks. Please start a new thread asking for help with your problem. The Major prefers that you not add your problem to someone else's thread, even if it appears to be the same problem and also not drag up a year old thread unless you have a solution for the problem posted by the person starting the thread.

I did not mean to post here. I was on another thread and hit "reply" but had to register first. After I registered the site brought me here. Should I delete my message?

You won't be able to delete because editing only lasts for about 20-30 minutes after you post.
Just copy what you posted above and paste it into a new thread with the title "removing AIM popup message" or something similar.
