Chinese New Year 2008

Well, Chinese New Year has rolled around again for 2008, and Sydney always celebrates (along with the Chinese), because it's always lots of fun. Here's what's happening in my town http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/CNY/

Chinese New Year, pronounced in Chinese as 'xin nian', occurs on the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar. There are different versions of the story behind the development of the Chinese zodiac, but all the versions are based around a race called by an Emperor to determine the animals to be represented.

The cunning Rat hitched a ride on the back of the Ox and crossed the winning line first. The Rat was followed (in order) by Ox (Cow), Tiger, Rabbit (Cat), Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram (Goat, Sheep), Monkey, Rooster (Chicken), Dog and Pig (Boar).

According to the Chinese zodiac, you take on the characteristics of the animal associated with the year of your birth, but those characteristics are also influenced by what time of day you're born, what fixed element you belong to (water, metal, wood, fire, earth), as well as the influence of Yin and Yang.

The Chinese zodiac for the next 12 years is:

Fun dates link as well...Celebrations have already started here, though Chinese New Year is today (7th)...nice to see what goes on, particularly the parade in China Town (downtown Sydney), and the Dragon Boat Races are hilarious to watch (have a couple of friends manning oars there too!)

 

I have always like the Chinese zodiac more than the GrecoRoman one.

 

Hmmm...got me stumped there...but then I'm not an expert on the Chinese Zodiac. Their calendar and the different, intricate systems they apply when fine tuning an individual's sign and its elements becomes too complex for my simple mind.:heliLOL

Traditionally in China, a new calendar began with each new Emperor and dynasty.

It still is fun checking out characteristics based on one's birthdate...and interesting also how different elements can vary to affect the characteristic qualities.

 

Okay...your post bothered me, so I wanted to find out for myself. Here's a break down in explanation:

According to a simplified version of your Chinese birth chart, based on your side of the world:

• you are as you've stated, "Green Chicken, born in the year of Green Horse"
  
• the Chinese add the name of Five Elements System, which are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth, on the top of animal names.
  
• The Five Elements are also connected to colors, Green being one, and the others are White, Black, Red and Brown. That's why each Chinese year has a color animal name.
  
• It can be said, you are a "Wood Chicken", too. "Wood" (Tree) is equivalent to color "Green" according to the Chinese Astrological Five-Element system (ie (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth).
  
• Also, based on your birth year, 1954: Feb 03 1954-Jan 23 1955 according to Chinese Zodiac, was the Horse, Wood (Green), + Yang Year.
