    Hey guys....
was wondering, I've heard all kinds of stories, but does anybody know when the "real" release of SP3 will come out for the public. I'm excited, heard about the 10% performance boost. I've heard it is suppose to be release the first half of 2008, but havn't heard anything. let me know!!! thx.

I wonder if it will ever happen especially with all this talk of Vista SP1 and dropping support for XP

I could've sworn I saw Halo post about the RTM being released recently, but can't find it for the life of me.

If that's true, it won't be long before the full launch

SP3 is still at RC1, I don't see any speed improvements running this. Main thing that I like is that it has all the updates post SP2.

@Mada, I think you meant Vista SP1 which has in fact RTM'd to OEM's and we'll see it on WU mid March. The SP1 RC1 refresh is working very nicely.

thx for the feedback...it would make sense for Microsoft to release Vista SP1 before XP SP3, gives people one more reason not to go to Vista. Thats what MA's article was talking about. It'll be interesting to see when it comes out. ;)

Vistas SP1 does give some speed boost, that I have noticed.

It also speeds file transfer, which is great for people like me :)

Mada_Milty, you weren't wrong and the Automated Installation Kit has been released. It can be found HERE.

As for XP SP3, no one really knows, it will be released when it's ready -- you can't rush perfection. :)

    Regards Jason :)

There's no reason to avoid Vista unless your system/peripherals/SW can't handle it. I'll look for MA's article.

Vista is a very good O/S providing you have the right hardware as augiedoggie said above.

What your forgetting is that Vista is made for future hardware and not current.

I know for a fact that everyone will grow to like Vista, How? Well, let's take a look.

When XP was released, what did everyone do? They moaned about it like they are about Vista now and said 98 was better. But look now, everyone loves XP.

Vista is the way forward, XP will not last forever.

    Regards Jason :)

SP3 for XP is not a massive update that many think it is, in some cases it "may" give some minor speed boost to a few operations, but it was more created to update a few outdated applications ( WiFi, BITS ) adds a couple that many* will never use or have the need too ( NAP for one plus a few other Network admin options) and increase stability.

Changes coming in XP SP3 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&displaylang=en

Currently its at RC2 and release date is sometime first half of this year, nowt like a wide window release time, my personal guess ( as even testers dont have accurate dates until just before a public announcement ) is that XP SP3 will come a month or so after Vista SP1, which is in Vista's case soon.

@Mada, it would have been Vista SP1 RTM I was talking about.

*apart form the few network admins I know who are members here.

Vista is most definately for current hardware, even recent hardware up to a year ago.

Its been out since 4th quarter 2006, after all.

That said, im running it on a 3 year old machine. I have 5.9s across the board for the WEI aside from the CPU, which holds me back at 5.0.

Yes, true. I get 5.6 and built my system just over a year ago.

But, scoring is going to change, once newer hardware is released, such as the 45nm processors.

It will always be true that the faster the hardware, the faster the OS runs.

That is not an indicator that the OS is intended for future hardware vs. current.

When the WEI is updated, I think you will find that current hardware will not score lower, however new hardware will simply score higher than the current scale.

Otherwise, the results would be completely misleading.

    Yes, I concur.

But, it's best to have better hardware, such as more ram, so you have more scope to run different apps in the background, as well as playing games :)

    Regards Jason :)
