install realtek hd audio driver failure!! - calling on 'musksnipe'

    Hello everybody.

I've been searching the internet for a resolution to my sound problem for months, and have dedicated many long hours to fixing it, with no results. Most recently I've found a user with the username 'musksnipe' on this forum who has helped others with the issue I currently face... Let me give you the whole story.

My sound used to be completely sporadic. At random times, the sound would shut off entirely, and I'd be unable to resolve the issue until I tinkered around with it by reinstalling drivers, restarting my computer a few times, ect. At this point, my sound doesn't seem to want to come back at all. The Creative Diagnostics have me passing will flying colors, but I am still unable to hear any sound. Something really strange is that when trying to view youtube, or any other type of videos, my browser will kind of freeze up for like 7 seconds, and when it starts, the video won’t play longer than 2 seconds without stopping. It’s ridiculous.

I made that post a few weeks ago on another forum.. I tried all of their suggestions, but nothing worked. I've targeted several different problems that I thought could be the cause, but again there has been no resolution. At this point, I've targeted the highlighted exclamation beside "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus". I've downloaded and tried to install drivers to alievate the problem, but am alerted with "install realtek hd audio driver failure!!"

Just a little more information... The problem hasn't always been like this. When I first built my computer and got everything running, the sound was flawless. Sadly i've been faced with internet problems before that required alot of tinkering to eventually fix. Whether or not these two things are related is not know to me.

I am willing to do anything to fix this, and I am very confident that with your help, I will finally beable to have sound. Thank you for taking the time to read all of that.

Suddenly, I feel like the gunfighter that everyone comes to town looking for. :guns

Make sure your speakers are getting a good connection in the jack and that they don't have any possible breaks in the wiring. (You might want to test them on another PC)

OK, first I'll need a little more info. What is your motherboard manufacturer and model number?
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware-related Pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

Ah, musksnipe. I knew you'd pull through!

First of all, I took note last night that you've been helping other members across about a year and a half, so I first would like to say thanks from both myself and everyone you've assisted. Also, thank you for being so exact with your instructions... I've gotten myself quite acquainted with PCs and the operation of an array of programs, but it's nice to follow a direct guide. ;)

I hope that I got the information you need... quite a handy little tool everest is.

Thanks for the praise, now I will HAVE to get your sound working! ;)

These are probably the first steps we'll have to go through to sort out your sound. (Might even have to back track on this, if I guess wrong)
Everest shows that you have Creative Audigy LS Audio Processor sound.
(Gigabyte shows you should have a Realtek Azalia chip)
    The Creative is an add-on.
I'm not that knowledgeable about added-on cards but we'll give it a go.
Have you made sure that on-board sound is disabled? (In BIOS)
Test your sound, if you change this. If you had some sound before changing it and none after, change it back to enabled.
Have you made sure the card is seated solidly?
Creative probably asked you to check these this, hopefully.

To get to BIOS: (As the PC starts, press one of these keys (here is a list by manufacturer) http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
Or the right key will be posted on the very first screen. Tap it until you enter set-up, then look for your audio (it should be in Advanced))

Set a System Restore point.(Always a good thing, before messing with drivers)
Install your chipset driver as a just-in-case. (That'll make sure your board recognizes the drivers and devices properly)
    http://www.gigabyte.us/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2517

    Make sure you re-boot.

This should be the right driver for your Creative card.
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy LS series driver update
    Download Now

If you still have bad sound after doing this, do the next steps.

I'm not sure if the on-board sound drivers need to be working right for the Creative one to work right, too. (Looks like I have some more research to do) :(
You will have to have the BIOS on-board sound enabled for these steps.

Go into Device Manager and right click the "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus", then uninstall it. If it won't uninstall, disable it then uninstall it

Now reboot. Did the audio device reinstall it self properly? (Don't panic yet) LOL

    Also:
Are your Codecs up to date?
I like this one as I was still having Codec problems after installing a more popular one and this one fixed the problem.

If you do get my sound working, your name will be praised across the country.

I'm going to give your ideas a shot, just keeping you updated.. I'm checking this thread every 20 minutes or so, but if you want to contact me for live messaging, I have MSN Messenger - rahfulz@hotmail.com and AIM - rahfulz.

Sorry, I don't have Messenger installed. I spend to much time here to chat. elsewhere. LOL

Besides it's really a good thing to work it out here in the forum, so that others with the same prob can get it sorted also.
    If it ends that way.

No problems.. I just went to BIOS. I scanned every menu there and I swear to god I saw nothing concerning audio.

    Odd?

EDIT : I noted that you found my sound card as "Audigy LS"? I've always searched for the drivers as plain Audigy and the one you gave me to download is different.. Perhaps this will be fixed as easy as that?!

    Only time will tell.

Double edit : It says "Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audigy LS on your system. :cry

I'm trying to download your manual now but getting some real slow speed.
Try looking in Advanced>Integrated Periphials>possibly something with PCI>Azalia something. I'll know better once the manual downloads.

  10. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

OK, This is where you find your audio in BIOS. It's listed as Azalia Codec in Integrated Periphials. It should be set to disabled.

Edit: I just saw your edits. Maybe your Creative isn't installing because on-board sound is enabled in BIOS.

I'm not sure if this happened when I disabled the option in BIOS, or when just now i fully uninstalled/reinstalled my stuff, but the highlighted "!" is gone.. actually the entire high definition audio option is gone.

I know this is when it gets fixed. Should I install the rest of the stuff on the Sound Blater CD? Is there something else I should first?

    Guide me from here! :O

I believe it disappeared when you re-set the BIOS. (It is still there, just not showing with on-board sound disabled) The Realtek drivers are only for your on-board sound. If you can't get the Creative installed, we will have to deal with it. (I hate Realtek problems) LOL

OK, do you have any sound at all or is it just bad sound?
Do you have the Creative Volume Icon in your task bar?
Do you have Digital Speakers or normal ones?
What does Device Manager tell you when right-click and choose Properties on the Sound Blaster listed there?

Did you check to see that Creative is your Default sound device?
Click Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the Audio button, make sure that your Sound Blaster device is chosen as the Default device.

  22. Rahful

    Rahful Private E-2

No sound. When I turn the volume knob on my speakers all the way up, I can hear a sound... hard to describe... It's not popping or anything, just a sound you would get when you turn your speakers all the way up and nothing in playing, haha. :confused

Yes, the Creative Volume icon is at the tool bar.

I have Logitech speakers... here's a link to the exact model.

And I believe you're looking for

but i'll include this obnoxiously large picture. LOL

Did you see this in my last post? I was a late edit.
My wife has a Sound Blaster Card so we may be able to compare settings there.
If you right click the Volume Icon in task bar, you have a choice to run Diagnostics, try that.
I will run through her setup for any good tips.

Yeah, I caught the edit and responded accordingly.

EDIT : Diagnostics run successful, have tried them many times.

    What the hell.. seriously.

I ran them 30 minutes ago... Fine. Now its says the DirectSound test failed. I fixed that last night... It must have kicked back up when I updated a wrong driver. Ugh.

    I'll roll back.

    musksnipe Guest

I am looking back at the driver I told you to download and I don't see anything in the driver pack for SB Live. Go to Device Manager and roll-back the driver. I am going to Creative now to take another good look at things.

  27. Rahful

    Rahful Private E-2

    Ah. Relief.

Rolled back, everything is fine in Diagnostics now...

Okay, also instead of the SB Live! I'm getting Sound Blaster Audigy for Default Audio Device...

    This driver says...

    Driver Provider: CREATIVE
    Driver Date: 7/8/2005
    Driver Version: 5.12.1.512

I am pretty sure we have the right driver, at least from what Everest is reporting as the PCI Audio Device.
That link you posted may be the right thing. I had to get another poster to force his Realtek driver that way in Win2000.

Have you pulled your card out and then reseated it, just to be sure it is in there right?
Make sure to un-plug your power first.

You can use 7Zip to extract your drivers if you don't have the apps mentioned in that link.

If this forced driver installation doesn't work, I think i'll have to crack open my PC.

I am very cautious however.. I had someone help me build it and I have about $1,200 of hardware in there.

This is a pretty good tutorial on replacing the sound card. You shouldn't have to really disconnect anything, if you just pull it up a wee bit and then just make sure it is seated good. Also check any connections to be sure they are tight.

I'm having a little trouble trying to force these drivers... I WinZiped that download you linked to me and put it into a folder. I go to update driver on Sound Blaster Audigy but it's not letting me select the folder as a whole when I try to tell the computer where to look for the driver.

  38. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

Point it to setup.exe within that folder.

  39. Rahful

    Rahful Private E-2

    I don't have that option.

  40. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

    Did you unzip the folder?
Try pointing it to the drivers folder, inside the main folder.

  41. Rahful

    Rahful Private E-2

    Yeah, it's no good.

The one folder that I was able to scan for the driver said that my current one couldn't be updated any further. If that is the correct one, this method won't work... At least I don't thik so. :(

  42. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

Or you can put your CD in and point toward the driver there in the same way.

  43. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

Yeah, I just tried to point to the setup.exe and couldn't but I could open the folder, as far as the driver main folder. Let me look in to this a little more.

  44. Rahful

    Rahful Private E-2

You know how when I updated my driver, and the thing changed from Sound Blaster Audigy to like SB Live 24-bit? Maybe it needs to be like that... My installation CD on the right says Sound Blater 24-bit advanced HD... Could that be the type of soundcard I have? Is there a driver on that site for it? But I dont understand why it would cause me to fail the DirectSound test... This is stupid

Yes, the second sound driver is that Live! driver. But you could also, try the first, as it is 3 drivers and should detect which is the proper one for your system.
    http://us.creative.com/support/down...&driverlang=1033&OS=10&drivertype=0&x=26&y=16

    Before installing:
Goto Device Manager and delete all references (see note at bottom) to all sound cards.
    Shut completely down.
Boot back up, load your drivers for the card and it should go....well, maybe anyhow.

Note: If you see any Realtek onboard sound .....DO NOT delete these, but disable them only.

  47. Rahful

    Rahful Private E-2

Okay. The only thing that I can uninstall is the Sound Blaster Audigy.. I'll do that and get back to you.

Thanks again for the help thus far. Very generous of you.

  48. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I didn't see this before on the Creative site.
Would you like to use Creative's AutoUpdate service? AutoUpdate automatically detects updates for your Creative products.

The only other fix I can find for this problem is to remove all audio drivers (as in the last post)
    Physically remove your sound card
    Boot back up.
Shut down again and reinsert your card.
Boot up again and install the drivers

Another thing that is possible to try. (This works for Realtek)
    1) Uninstall the Creative software through Add/Remove Programs
    2) In Device Manager, remove the high definition audio device under Sound, Video & Game controllers. In your case, it would be the SB Audigy.
    3) Still in Device Manager, double-click Legacy Audio Drivers.
    4) Click on the Properties tab.
    5) Select all sound devices listed here and click the Remove button. (Do not remove Legacy or Codecs)
    6) Restart Windows and retry the installation.
You may need to remove any instances of the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio listed under System devices as well.
Go into Device Manager, under the system folder, right click the UAA Hi-Def Bus driver.
Disable the device and then uninstall it. (Do not re-boot yet)
    Install your driver, then re-boot.

Well. I get the SB LIVE drivers in with no hassle, but now the creative diagnostics tells me that directsound test failed... This is never going to be fixed. It's in an endless loop of errors.

    GAH!!!

  50. musksnipe

    musksnipe Guest

I found this at MS but i'm not sure if this will help:
To start the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click Start, click Run, type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK.
The Sound tab displays your current sound settings, and enables you to test DirectSound. The Sound tab can tell you if your audio driver is "Signed" - which indicates that it has passed Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs testing regimen.

The Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider is used to correct audio glitches that might be caused by some audio drivers. Reducing the acceleration by one notch and re-testing the application is the best way to troubleshoot DirectSound audio problems. Lowering the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level from the default setting of "full acceleration" may disable advanced audio processing techniques, such as 3D spatialization from functioning.

If the DirectX Diagnostic Tool detects a problem with your sound settings, a warning message is displayed in the Notes box.

I will try again in the morning to get into the Creative US site. There are some FAQ's there with info I haven't read yet. You are not the only person with this problem from what I've seen in my searches. The problem is there doesn't seem to be anyone with an answer yet. But I don't believe a re-install of Windows is the only solution as I saw posted somewhere.

As a next resort, we can try to get your on-board Realtek drivers running correctly. But they can be very stubborn too.
