Looks like I backed the wrong horse yet again. O well, I can just buy a blu ray player and be happy that I didn't get a huge collection like I have with my Laser Disks

 

I saw the article about Star Trek on HD DVD first before I saw Yahoo has the same article that MSN has. They are pulling the Season 1 HD DVD and not doing any others.

I'm not surprised because we knew there would be a winner just like the Betamax/VHS war. At least people who own a PS3 won't have an outdated format.

 

Now maybe the prices of the BluRay DVD's will fall as the manufacturers only have to cater for one standard. Bazza

 

Why do they bother competing against Sony,Sony will set every video format standard for the next 50 years,if I'm still alive then you can say I'm wrong.

 

I'm old enough to remember the one they lost, which hurt them. That was the Betamax standard vs. the VHS standard. Win some, loose some.

 

That wasnt all that long ago. I remembered it when I was a kid.

 

They lost kinda,all the major technology in VHS was developed by Sony and used under license by everyone else

 

Actually video tape was developed in the states. It was reel to reel, but 90% of the technology was there. The differences between BetaMax and VHS wasn't that great either, the tapes inside the cartridges were the same sizes width wise.

Yeah, but I wasn't a kid then, dang it. I had even bought a defunct video tape machine with hopes of fixing it.
