Does anyone know how to get a snapshot from a video I have saved on my hard drive? Do I need a special program or is there a way to do it with windows Vista premium? If I need a program does anyone know of a free one?
I tried alt+ print screen and ctrl + print screen, but when I try to paste it in paint or cs2, I just get black.

Windows Movie Maker will do that for supported video formats, and should be included with your Vista Premium installation. If that won't work, post back with the video format.

My avvie was made from two screenshots off of a youtube video. I just used the print screen (no other keys) and pasted into a photo editor.

there's a pretty good explanation for the black screen here.

Thanks for the help everyone, I managed to do it using VLC as Key suggested, but I would really like to do it next time using Windows media center, but can't seem to get past that black screen. I checked out the explanation as Key suggested, and they said to do this-
    1. Open your Window Media Player and click Options on the Tools menu.
    2. On the Performance tab, click on the Advanced... button.
    3. Uncheck Use overlays from DVD video, click OK and restart the player.

Problem is, when I open Media player, or media center, I can't find the tools menu. Where is it?

Ctrl I works on some versions of media player (depending on the video format)

Doesn't work on mine, , I tried it in media center and it took me to the pictures folder, then I tried it in media player and nothing happened. I guess it's not that important now, since I can do it in VLC, but I'd really like to learn how to access the Media Center tools menu now. I feel a little stupid here, I must be overlooking something, but I just can't find it.:confused
