Here I am twiddling my thumbs, bored. I cant get the OS to crash, no matter what I do. I even installed SP1 for adventure, and couldn't even get a rise out of the OS.

Everything just...works. I have nothing to fix, or anything left to tweak. What am I supposed to do? So bored...Vista is pathetic.

Actually, I did get Vista stuck in an infinite loop when it tried to install updates from 14 Feb. Machine kept rebooting claiming it was installing part 3 of an update and then kept on repeating the reboot cycle. Repair console did not repair! So had to resort to restoring from an old restore point and re-downloading the updates again :( Was almost going to re-format and re-install Vista.

Also, Comodo firewall seems to have some sort of problem and its self-diagnosis could not correct it but Vista claims it wanted to install a driver for it!? Will have to sort that out sometime.

Also, Vista SP1 looks like its going to break several software applications: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7205059.stm Looks like Windows XP SP2 all over again, history repeats itself. Bill's pose looks like he is saying "Hey, it's not my fault, honest!" :D

Install the Nokia mobile phone suite software. That'll give you a BSOD....

Well the BBC need to get upto speed as this is the offending KB and when read properly they as in the 3rd parties not MSFT have updated many of the apps that failed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935796 ( taking into account this SP is not public yet ) but their is NO way that all apps could be tested for compatability on any OS and a major update, failing apps are a part of the PC experience, they happen.

Comodo and the fact that I uninstalled it gave me issues on installing SP1 it failed each time, not due to MS but due to Comodo and a poor uninstaller than left components in the registry and corrupted the Security Center, this I was lucky in having one of the Vista dev team help me fix, so hopefully this was fed back to Comodo so they can fix their app.

I have this installed and has not caused me any issues apart from one of the original versions about a year ago, the latest ones are ok in Vista + SP1 ( version 6.85.14.1 is what I using )

Vista's built in one for now. But have PC Tools Firewall ready to test at some point.

LOL Adryn's never satisfied. Sounds like a masochist to me.:D

BTW, I use PCTools on both XP and Vista and love it, the GUI looks just like ZA does so basically zero learning curve. It's for outbound protection incase anything does get in and wants to phone home.

Man, if you can't break it, then it wasn't designed very well!
I have been wondering why I haven't had a system crash or lock up since I got Vista.
I am almost ready to go back to XP, so I can re-boot out of them.

I tried twice to d/l and install the free version of Zone Alarm and both times, it crashed and locked up. Had to unplug to free it. Then reboot.
Now using Comodo firewall pro. So far, no problems.

    Go figure.

Oh you cheated and went straight to SP1. You should have download the pre-requiste updates to SP1.......crashed Vista perfectly on a HP laptop. You never get a rise out of it again :D LITERALLY!

The only issue that I have ever had with Vista has been network/modem related, coupled with the fact that I do not use Vista as my primary OS. Seems Vista, Avast, and the Windows Defender all get in a fight for my limited bandwidth and lock the machine up tighter than a drum.

Come out of Hibernation mode while running a dream scene in the background. Happens about 1 out of 10 times for me. Other than that, I've been crash free.

I have this running on two Vista computers with no problems at all.

I've been running Vista for the past 3-4 months (wow can't believe its been that long) and I've had no problems so far. The only thing that disappointed me was at first Firefox would freeze and shut down on some sites (Major Geeks it hated) but it seems to have stopped. Otherwise everything else was simple.

ditto, I put Ultmate on a new build and not had a problem and Home came with my wife's laptop. No problem in 6 months.

Been running vista on 2 pcs for about 6 months only 2 crashes- one related to incompatible software i tried to install (roxio) and another one the repeats is a lock up while playing Universe at War (suspected game glitch or Vid card issue)

Uninstalled Comodo from Vista, had to follow the detailed regedit instructions posted at their forums and manual file deletion, ugh :( Comodo Firewall claimed it was having problems and using it to self-diagnose didn't won't, even when run as administrator. The uninstaller failed to uninstall everything and left junk everywhere :cry

Now installed PC Tools Firewall + on Vista, so far so good. :)

I have since uninstalled Comodo Firewall and installed PC Tools Firewall + on one of the Win XP machines as well, which solved one the mysterious network issues that it had, which was a bonus :cool

Probably go the whole hog and do all the networked PCs...

I ran into the same Maxwell and thought I got it all, until I installed SP1 and it wouldnt install.. kept failing. With you having similar issues, I guess I really need to type up the fix I got for this if some have Comodo issues.

Ouch thats a long list of manual steps there Maxwell, I just hope that they prodcuce an uninstaller like Norton have to mop up the left overs, sadly I had thought I got all the left overs but it had broken the Security Center anyways so a few scripts were needed to be run, if you have issues going to SP1 lef tme know, but I will try and type a boilderplate up for this in case its not fixed and some get a SP1 failure to install notice.
