The Range of Sound

    Hi,

I use my computer to play a lot of videos that I havestored in my pc. The range of sound goes from very low to very high. .wav files are extremely loud.

I tried to set the sound in "Volume Control Panel" for everything at medium level so that I could lower it when it's too loud and I put the .wav setting at low, but the change in settings didn't do anything at all.

I also have AC97 Audio Configuration. All the setting were at 0dB. I upped them 1 notch to +6dB on the equalizer and that didn't help either.

Anyone have an idea about what I can do?

Upping the sound by 6dB should double the volume intensity as far as I'm concerned. So if you put the main voulme control at the lowest setting does that make a difference or not?

I first tried setting the main volume control to 0db and there was no sound. I put it up to the max (there's no dB settings, just notches) and the sound was good. I left the other ones at medium. I found a nifty little option that would add additional settings, one being PC speaker. I added that one and set the volume up to the max.

I've noticed a difference . . . it's louder. I'm just waiting to see if a system .wav sound will blow me out of my chair because I set other settings to high. . . wav files were always very loud to begin with. When I lowered .wav sounds, the sound coming out of my speakers was terrible for all types, mp3's, avi, etc, so I put it back up to medium.

So to put it in a nutshell, main volume control and pc speaker settings are set on hgh and the rest of them are at medium.

I've just checked mine to see what I've got set. And I have the Volume Control at medium, Wav just below medium, PC Speaker medium everything elase about medium but with AUX, Line In, Microphone and Phone Line all muted.

Works for me and I have AC97 (but no Audio Config utility). :)

Hi Yargwel . . . thanks for letting me know your pc audio settings. It's also nice to "see" you again.

I have PC up to the highest. I notice the difference there the most. There were times that I had to actually keep my ear about 5" away in order to hear .avi's. I'm going to be looking for a program that will raise the sound. I have GAIN for my mp3's but I didn't check it out to see if it'll work on movies/cartoons/tv shows.

I have AC97. It has the options. I don't uncheck options unless I know for sure that it's ok, like line-in. SW Synth, CD Player, Line In are set to Medium. Wave is set 1 notch below Medium, Volume Control is set High.

Just had a thought :hammer Have you checked under Sound and Audio devices in the Control Panel and made sure the settings are correct in there? :confused

Both Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and Volume Control settings are all set to high.

I'd say that about 25% of the time, I have my speakers' knob and the player's audio slide bar set to high, and sometimes it's still not loud enough to hear the audio.

It could be that the speakers have a problem. They're about 5 years old and get a lot of use.

I don't know if there's a audio something-or-other on the mobo that was affected when I had all those problems during the build.

So what happens if you run the speaker test in the AC'97 control panel?

I don't see anything for a test. The only setting I saw was to set the speakers as desktop speakers.

Control Panel>Sound Effect Manager>One of the ten tabs is Speaker test

Also the Speaker Configuration tab needs to be looked at too.
