    I have a dv9000t CTO notebook with a p/n GT811AV,

    It has Intel PM965/GM965/GL960 Chipset
    It also has Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC and Realtek High Definition Audio
    * Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    * Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    * 17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)
    * 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    * 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS!!
    * HP Imprint Finish (Radiance) + Webcam + Microphone
    * Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection

    I have been at this for a week scouring the net including this site. At the point where others are saying viola, I get either a "The device's co-installer is invalid" or a -0001 error. Any assistance for a strong endgame would be greatly appreciated.

    When installing the Realtek drivers through the New Hardware Wizard, choose "Install from a list or specific location", then "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install", and then the "Have Disk" button. Then point to the audio drivers on the CD.

    You may

    Greetings,

    I am glad you responded as I have been reading from you for several days now and figured you would be able to help.

    I can't get to the point of installing through the new hardware wizard.

    When I follow the procedures you outlined here:

    I get to the point of reinstalling the realtek drivers and rebooting. However upon reboot I get messages saying that realtek device has been found and then that MEDIA has been found. Media is the only one that comes up with a new hardware wizard but I don't know exactly what drivers I use for MEDIA.

    Maybe finding these will resolve things. On hp support they said I might have sp3 installed and gave me device drivers for UAA specific to that, however, the realtek installs its own UAA which is compatible with sp2 whenever I install realtek. I've been at this for a week as the final component of my xp dual boot. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    I've only seen one other with that message and this resolved the Media message, but we haven't finished getting his audio installed yet. (His problem is a downgrade form Vista to XP)

    Goto Device Manager>System and look for: Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator
    If you DO have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices
    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Scenario Two
    If you DON’T have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Go to the Control Panel and run “Add Hardware”
    * When the Add Hardware Wizard appears, click Next
    * Wait for it to search for new hardware
    * Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next
    * Scroll all the way down and select “Add a new hardware device”, click Next
    * Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)”, click Next
    * Select “Show All Devices” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Under Model, select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”, click Next
    * To start installing the drivers, click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Your audio device should now be recognized in Sounds and Audio Devices.
    In your list of specs in your first post, you said you have Vista as an OS. :confused

    I just cut and pasted the factory specs. I'm actually dealing with a dual-boot situation with XP in a partition on my second hard drive. I have done this and I'm still getting an unknown device in sounds and audio devices. I appreciate the assistance and any further tips would be most welcome.

    I just tried to repeat the process and it's saying I need swenum.sys. I have the installation cd but I don't see that file in any folder. I appreciate the assistance once again.

    Okay I found swenum.sys in system32\drivers and then downloaded streamci.dll which was also required, but still no success in getting sound installed. :cry Any other ideas?

    It is actually a download. I haven't tried a CD at all as I don't want to waste one without knowing for sure that it will work. This will make the 5th wdm_r187 file I've downloaded and tried.

    I have not tried this UAA file before as it has been revision A.

    What exact procedure should I follow with these two files? It might be the procedure that I've been following that is the issue. Also, is there anything I should remove or uninstall to ensure the process goes well?

    Before trying the reinstall, look into this:
    KB835221 Hotfix http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=pv-22533-1
    1. Remove "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus"
    2. Download from Microsoft the KB835221 hotfix and install it
    3. Restart the system, and XP will automatically detect the devices
    4. After this you should be able to install Realtek drivers.
    See if that works then move on to the next, if it doesn't

    The official version is install the UAA first, although I have seen fixes that worked installing the driver first. you may also have to do these steps again.
    1) Uninstall the Realtek software through Add/Remove Programs (if it's installed but not working)
    2) In Device Manager, remove the High Definition audio device (or the unknown device, if there is one) under Sound, Video & Game controllers.
    3) Still in Device Manager, double-click Legacy Audio Drivers.
    4) Click on the Properties tab.
    5) Select all sound devices listed here and click the Remove button. (Do not remove Legacy or Codecs)
    6) Go into Device Manager>System, right click the UAA Hi-Def Bus driver.
    Disable the device and then uninstall it. (Do not re-boot yet)
    KB888111
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2\KB888111
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.
    Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html

    Install the UAA (from HP), install the KB835221 Hotfix
    Install your driver, then do a complete shut down and re-boot.

    Edit: Check: Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
    Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
    Right click on it and choose Properties.
    Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

    I tried the first suggestion but on bootup no sound.

    For #2 in the official version I'm not able to uninstall the Unknown device. I don't have any devices listed under legacy audio devices. The registry entry is listed under SP3 as opposed to SP2. Perhaps this is the cause of my woes? Also, it is named KB888111WXPSP2. I've run cleaner and registry. I'm installing the original UAA from HP now (sp32646) ((It's a shame that I've seen that file so much that I remember the number from memory)). I'm doing the hotfix then I'll reinstall the driver. Wish me luck.

    Go ahead and run the reg removal on that. I've probably transposed the name somewhere along the way. The unknown device might uninstall if you disable it first.

    On restart it said that it found realtek (although I could tell that the sound wouldn't work because the speaker icon on my quicklaunch buttons turns red as the xp bootup screen is loading)...However it says that it is looking for MEDIA. once it gets to the point of finding the PCI device. Where can I get a MEDIA driver or how can I force XP to recognize it?:confused

    Is it a problem that it's in the SP3 folder but it's called SP2? I didn't even know I had SP3 (although it might have come through on an automatic update). I did the reg removal and then tried to proceed with the procedure from there. Should I try to do the reg removal there and then again try to uninstall the unknown device before continuing through the process? :confused

    No, I didn't give up. I was off playing COD.
    I'm not having any luck with this MEDIA thing. I hadn't heard of it until yesterday and I'm not getting any search hits about resolving it.
    The only way I know of forcing the driver to install is manually pointing it to the driver folder,
    From this point on, this is new to me, too.

    Okay, well, this system might be the holy grail of dv9000 XP audio problems...yeah! If I can only find out what this "Media" exactly is. It only shows up once the PCI device that's linked with UAA installation shows up first. I appreciate your diligence in helping me resolve the issue.

    Hey, Josh. Thanks for the heads up. ;)
    I haven't seen that download before and it may be the one I need to help folks with HP's.
    Can't wait to give it up to someone to see if it really solves that MEDIA problem.
